Should I use fast travel?
First playthrough. I didn't want to do Survival mode because I figured I'd rather take it a bit easier while experiencing the world. I've been really indecisive about using fast travel though. I feel that it's very useful, but I also feel it ruins the experience of travelling the commonwealth. Where the issue comes in is that if I don't use fast travel on my first playthrough, by the time I try a second playthrough in survival mode, I would have experienced most of the commonwealth by always travelling on foot. Do you guys think I should use fast travel or not?

That's kind of like saying you want to explore the world, but don't want to explore the world so that you'll still be able to explore the world.

In order to use fast travel to reach a destination, you're going to have to walk there first, so you'll be getting plenty of exposure no matter what you do.

FT is perfectly acceptable for the sake of expediency. I would recommend at least once a week walking NSEW from map edge to map edge, and don't always stay on the roads.

You will end killing a ton of blood bugs but also discover some unique stuff.

Stuff is good, unique stuff is better.

Personnaly I started to use fast travel when I praticaly discovered the full map end enter in most of the building.
Generaly I continue to walk but when I need to manage my settlement I tend to use fast travel.

edit: something I often do when I use fast travel is to reach a spot near my final destination and finish by walk.

I found that when I used FT, I'd walk to a new location due to a quest or just my curiousity filling my pockets as I went. When my pockets were full I'd FT back to base to unload/rearm then FT back to where I left off to continue.

When I played Survival I couldn't do this. And since I didn't want to walk thru already cleared areas I would end up doing big circuits around my temporary base so I'd be constantly exploring new territory.

This makes the game compeltely different as you discover a lot of areas that would otherwise be overlooked.

So, my advice is its ok to use FT to go home and empty your pockets but then walk back to where you left off by a DIFFFERENT route so you are not skipping areas.

Practically every house and structure has a note or terminal or something that is a clue or part of a story that helps create a much larger story of the CW.

This is particularly true downtown Boston. Choose a different street each time you move across the city. Explore the alleys (there is tons of raider camps and loot to be found). Many of these alleys are only accessible from one side.

BTW, I do not recommend Survival for your first playthrough. You need to know where to find beds, doctors, food and water before taking on Survival. It's enough of a challenge when you do know where to find these things.

Damn, that's actually I good idea. I usually fast travel to base to unload loot then fast travel back to where I was to continue walking. But I kinda like this idea

Continue your assiduous avoidance of fast travel until it's purpose becomes obvious to you and never take outside advice (like this) about how to play this game unless strongly tempted by it :)

Fast travel has it's place. I still use it even in Survival, yes there is a mod, but I still do a lot a walking. Can you miss stuff when you FT? I will say that it depends... if you travel in a straight line just to get from point A to point B you will miss stuff whether you FT or not.

I only play Survival now but I will still FT to get "home" or to sell stuff in Diamond City. Frankly, I want to play the game and to me, walking is just wasting time. I walk when I want to explore an area.

My recommendation is to try both; see what you like best.

I would say you should refrain from using it as much as possible. The key is to not worry about taking every single bit of scrap in an area - just take what you need and move on. I only use it when I've forgotten to do something before leaving camp. Then I just hop back, do that thing, and hop back to where I left off.

Personally, I'd avoid FT if you're going for 100% immersion or if you want to have a serious play without "convenience".

Me? Well, I'm a FT junkie in FO4 (currently), but I'm on a new play through Skyrim and use the taxi/coach to "FT". Otherwise there, I'll huff on foot or use a horse everywhere.

before doing survival mode, i used fast travel to unload loot like ranger said, and i used it when trying to finish a quest, especially the main quest.
