Rob their house, take everything.
Thank me later.
If you ever do take a settlement, abuse the hell out of the purified water system.
One other way is making money through a drug empire.
try to get a brahmin at as many supply line linked settlements as possible and buy anything that gets you plastic and keep making jet and selling it at any owned clinic.
While no perk is required you do at least need a chemistry station which requires a perk to build.
Might try to take sanctuary as a settlement (by complete the concord mission) and farm caps. Going to get a Spray And Pray first.
When you do concord, find the mattresses first. There are none inside of the building itself. There is one right down from redrocket in the deserted house, there is the fire in the parking lot, and their is the quarry. And of course you can use redrocket too.
Not sure if you have done the concord mission in vanilla before, but your best bet is to take the death claw out from the roof. It takes some patience because it runs away for a while when it takes damage. But it will save you from getting killed. And when done killing the deathclaw, jump of the roof in power armor and run to the fire just below the building that the minutemen are trapped in.
Take advantage of the fact that you have to do what it takes to survive.
lots and lots of corn. each settler can grow 12 ears of corn per cycle.
each ear of corn sell for uh the 100% price is 6, 80% of 6 is probably rounding up to 5 caps.
so 60 caps per settler per cycle per settlement.
you just get a ton of corn (pick some up at greygarden I guess to start you off, check settler inventories)
I paid 1700 for spray and pray with 'high' charisma (use grape mentats) which is 340 corn. which would weigh 34.
