In my settlements the traders(Carla, Lucas, Cricket and Doc Weathers) will hang out around it, unless you give them something to sit on, like stools or a cooking station, nearby. Their pack brahmin are suppose to go under the tent and stay by the trough, although brahmin are brahmin and glitch out sometimes.
But as far as unique animations, like settlers going over and talking with them or anything like that, no. It'd be nice if they did.
I've never tried to build one at Oberland since that location is such a pain to defend. So I avoid building anything there. I usually only keep the original two settlers there and only use it as a connecting point for provisioners.
What makes it difficult to defend? I've never had much trouble with it myself.
However, if you place other props (Chairs, etc) near the Trade Post, the traders will interact with those too. It's a good way to set up like, a little bazaar. Plop the trade post down, then throw chairs and tables around it.
@DouglasGrave I will try that, and see if I can build at Oberland, I have had a few bugs there myself, I had to put all the beds in storage and then place them again to get the settlers assigned, and it does seem to take a while for assigned things to assign there.
My trading posts only ever have a vendor stop by if I reload the game. They never wind up going their on their own.
I think however, this is because my only trading post is in Sanctuary, and some merchants probably can't get to Sanctuary in a short enough time span to not conflict with their normal schedual.
