To be honest, I don't really enjoy building them and want to focus more on the side quests.

Just do the bare essentials, enough food, water, beds and a bit of defense. You don't have to pimp out every settlement. I just focus on a couple myself.

Once you get the people to Santuary, just dont help them do the set up quests. Avoid Preston. You will have to avoid the BoS version of the Preston Quests also when they become available but it a quest you can choose. Otherwise yes you can skip it all

Well, with certain DLC's, settlements do have a purpose. You can legendary farm by baiting attacks using Wasteland Workshop cages.

You dont have to do Settlements, heck you dont even have to meet Preston Garvey either.

If you already did Settlements well heck you can just flat out ignore their requests for help man its not really a big deal.

There is so much stuff to do in game more than half the time I ignore settlement requests anyway and just do what I feel like doing.

Heck man Im about to build up a settlement to use the settlers to test out my new robot deathrollers I made with Automatron :D

I would call that a sad state of 'purpose' for something which had so much effort and development.

You should build up at least two settlements to provide the plants for vegetable starch/adhesive (Corn, Mutfruit, Tato). It is a required component of nearly all the crafting upgrades you can apply to your clothes/armor/weapons. All the other settlements should have a provisioner linking them so you can share supplies between workbenches and not have to travel across the map just so you can build stuff.

Thanks.

The workbenches share the items? So if I gather items I can use them on all workbenches if I deposit them?

As long as you have provisioners going between the settlements.

Build at least two settlements, and then when they grow enough, go into workshop and highlight a settler in a settlement, hit Q, and assign them to be a provisioner to another settlement. This links the workshops between those two settlements. I build as many settlements as I can, and use Red Rocket, Sanctuary, and usually two of the far eastern settlements as my provisioner bases, where I send out provisioners from. This links all my workshops together so I can go anywhere and build using stuff stored in any of them. Remember, you CAN turn off the recruitment beacon if you don't want the settlement to grow more and need you to come back and build more beds/food/etc. This lets you control how fast your settlements grow, and reduces the need to go back and build more stuff at places you have already set up. Oh... Don't use robots for settlers. Any robot settler automatically sets happiness to a maximum of 50. You can do the Mechanist's Lair, and use it as a settlement... build robots, make 'em provisoners, and get NO reduction of happiness that way. For the Mechanist's Liar approach, I would suggest using the Mod that gives unlimited settlement building limit. This will let you build as many robots as you'll need for provsioners. Build your robots with good weapons (they don't need hands, so give 'em good weapons on each arm) and they stay alive while traveling the roads.
This post has gone on long enough,
enough from me.
PS: Remember to link your provisioner bases to each other! :)

I've found several mods that would do the trick . There is the ''Skinrippers Settlement Suppies'' that would most of your building materials (enough to get the settlement started) . The mod ''Utopia Generators'' give you all your food , power and defence needs to cover the settlement without doing anything .

Or if you're like me , use the mod ''Scrap Everthing'' . As the name suggestes , you can scrap the whole settlement and start building you own version of settlement (though I would ''loot'' the place first) .

The above are good suggestions, however it is very important to note, it's a trap. If you do not develop settlements nor worry about gaining experience from crafting, you need next to no adhesive at all. What you do need you can usually gather easily by raiding an established farm.

Diamond City has pretty much everything you need.

Further, for all the reasons you might need adhesives, this is also false. As you level the NPC 's you fight with weapons, the loot will start coming with all the MODs you would want for guns and armor. You can just strip them and use them on your own armor and weapons.

Not all mods appear for your weapons and armour. Furthermore if you do find a mod you really want on another weapon and you want to use it on yours, you need to install another mod which still consumes resources (with the exception of the muzzle).

Also Diamond City doesn't provide everything you need. The crops tend to be single use only (if they ever respawn at all) and some other resources are extremely rare which can only be obtained from other vendors. Also there is not enough space there to store so much bulky loot or display whatever you like.

you can even skip the miniutemen all together by just not ever rescuing the sancuary folks and going to diamond city yourself. should pick up the questline from there.

You can go one step further and skip diamond city, then go straight to the vault
