Random radiation in Fallout 4?

I have started a new game a few day ago and yesterday and today it happened two times: I am standing somewhere and all of a sudden I start getting rads (up to 25). Note that both times the weather was clear so radstorms were not the issue. I immediately run away both times and tried to see if I can make it happen again if I stand at the same spot. But nothing. The first time it happened near the bridge to Sanctuary, behind that statue. The second time I was nearby the downed Vertibird, east of Sanctuary, where you can find a power armor standing around. The second time I noticed a small dust cloud so I thought maybe there is radiated dust. But the internet says nothing about such thing. Is there some explanation for this or is it a bug? I am playing on normal difficulty if that matters.

You're probably passing too close to an Irradiated Thistle plant. They'll dose you big time when they trigger.

Irradiated Thistle plant? I dont remember seeing one around in both cases. But I remember finding one and walking into it out of curiosity and nothing happened... I am starting to believe the game is trying to troll me.

Thistle plants dump lots of radiation if you linger around them too long. It won't happen every time, but they do. Similar to the Barnacles around the Quincy Marshlands.

Just confirmed this. I went back to both locations this happened and there were irradiated whistles nearby. They do not sting you like I initially thought they would. Instead they release their irradiated spores ~5 seconds after you get close to them. Thanks for the info guys.
