Settlement Power Problem
(playing vanilla here)

Sometimes, when I am in workshop mode at a settlement, the power status is red, and I cannot figure out why. I've checked all the equipment power consumption requirements, and they total less than the generator output. Installing another generator—or more—doesn't satisfy the AI.

Any ideas?

Is everything either connected by a wire or within range of a conduit? Is everything actually getting power?
grsspirit Feb 22, 2019 @ 5:32pm
I get this when my settlement beacon and other things are connected to my power generators. Though I did have timed switch connected that did it. So it mite have been the timed switch maybe.
It might be the same for you.

Is the generator broken? Is there a wire not connected somewhere? I know I do that one a lot. Are you sure there is enough power? Is there like some sort of switch in your big power line that's set off, not letting power get to the rest of the settlement?

Re-connect your power cables so that they don't clip into any object at all, even when they show the green color

Why use a timed switch? If your power is off at times, how will your rocket launchers keep your settlement safe? Turrets help but not much. Do you turn off the power to your house at times? I doubt it so why so conservative with how much power you use anyway....? I'm sure the AI dosen't give a c**p's a**

I have checked every connection, and all equipment is functioning, powered. I am absolutely certain that there is enough power, because I went to every piece of powered equipment and added up what each piece required, and it was less than a hundred—around 85, I think (I've been off questing).

I don't know what a timed switch is; I use only direct connections from the generator to equipment and pylons between equipment. My general connection pattern is clock-like, with the generator, beacon, control terminal, and water pumps in the center, and defense turrets on the perimeter.

I'm going to try disconnecting every wire, rebuilding the generator, and re-establishing fresh power connections.

If the issue still persists, I'm going to ignore it.

I am also going to do a visual check on this, as sometimes I've noted that green connections dip into the terrain.

I have no first hand experience about this, and am merely repeating what I read on this forum from a previous poster, that sometimes you have to perform a repair on your generator, usually because it was shot up by raiders.
Or, it could be sabotage by a Synth in your settlement! :)
Jurassic Fart 1 Feb 22, 2019 @ 6:55pm
The generator's fine, but…I don't trust those damned synths; who knows what kind of clever and undetectable sabotage that they might commit?
Docsprock Feb 23, 2019 @ 4:56am
Is this on the island settlement? If so, be sure your generator is in the center of the island.

FYI, one posters suggestion for verifying/ridding the settlements of synths: after doing a quick save, kill them all and examine the bodies for synth components.
After re-loading from the save, lure any discovered synths away, and either execute or banish them. Alternatively, you could just keep an eye on them and possibly confront them.

Wow. Had no idea this was possible.

Discovered another related problem: I was supposed to wipe out the single Disciples outpost in the Commonwealth, which was situated on Finch Farm. I regretted having provided that gang with such excellent defenses, especially the ubiquitous missile turrets.

Despite having taken out the generators supplying power to the electricity-hungry destructors, the devices continued to fire upon me. Finally, after accessing Finch Farm's workshop, I approached the generators to repair them. They were not in need of repair…and they were off. Turning them back on, I inspected the kilowatt-gobbling devices that weren't working, and the connections supplying them. Again, there was no explanation; all equipment defied diagnosis, and no wires were clipping the ground nor objects.

I have to go through the VERY tedious process of completely dismantling the power network and all devices requiring power…only to REPLACE EVERYTHING.

This bug/glitch has become most annoying and unbelievably labor-intensive to "fix."

Okay now OP, if you still haven't resolved this issue and for anyone else seeking help with this, here's my experience with this. So far I have encountered this problem twice.
The first time, luckily for me, was when I was on the verge of switching over to a fusion generator. So, revising the wiring got rid of the problem for me, but then I had switched from a bunch of 10 watt gens, to a single 100 watt fusion genset.
The second time the generator output showed up red, I couldn't figure it out, I checked all the wiring ( I use the wiring glitch, so all the wiring is below ground level) and all the above ground terminals have a green wall light just above it. So at a glance I can see if the termination is outputting power.
This was a lesson learned from my first encounter with this problem. Another thing I did, when wiring in the new generator, was to have all the water purifiers at my water farm connected to a tall power pylon that sits atop a concrete building block, with good sight lines to all eight of my purifiers. The pylon in turn is direct wired to the generator.
After failing to resolve the problem conventionally, I switched off the pylon for a minute, (just for S's&G's) which shut down my water purifiers, and switching it back on solved the red gen output issue for me! Hope this helps someone! ymmv

Actually, there seems to be some kind of bug regarding the power. After assessing and repairing all equipment, and checking wires in a power chain, there's one thing that nonsensically works: scrapping and rebuilding a perfectly fine turret.

I should also mention that if you ever allow Abernathy Farm to be subjugated by a Nuka-World faction that you'll NEVER get it back. I finished the game, and Garvey never sent me there to help out.

Just talk to the people there(not raiders), they will give you the quest to reclaim it back.(clear out ghouls, mutants, raiders etc)
