I can't proceed with joining the institute
I went with the railroad to build the teleporter and the boss told me to put a holotape into one of the terminals. But now I want to join the institute so I can't just backstab them. So what should I do?

Go ahead and join. Role play that you are there just as a spy. There is something in the game about that. I think. You can proceed with all the factions up to a point. Then you gotta choose.

But I can't do any of the institute quests

There is a guide somewhere that tells how far you can go with each faction before you are forced to become hostile with another.

Short of a mod that changes it you have to destroy the institute or destroy at least two of the other factions that oppose the institute if you want to finish the main quest line.

I've just figured it out

OP is operating under a significant misapprehension. This is NO dilemma, no abstruse quandary. You may join ALL factions. Any betrayals you may or may not make are entirely of your own devising. Sooner or later, though, you will be forced to make a choice that both sides will be aware of. For instance, as a double agent for the Institute and the Brotherhood, you'll be forced to choose between teleporting to a destination on behalf of the Institute or informing the Brotherhood of their enemies' intentions. One way the Institute is permanently hostile, and the other, well, QED.

You may perform many acts of betrayal without incurring wrath not abating by going to sleep for three days, but some choices have graver consequences. If you are bothered by betrayal regardless of whether or not you'll be caught—not a requirement to consider in this game—the choice is easy and simple: Who do you most want to be loyal to? This loyalty/betrayal pickle you're in is entirely of your own devision.

It's called role playing. Many players do it. Doing anything/everything in the game that just helps you, the one sitting in the chair is not role playing.
