Energy and ballistic DR values can't be compared as is. This is because ballistic DR is compared against modified ballistic damage, while energy DR is compared against the weapons base damage. This makes a big difference that gets worse as you get more modifiers.
In order to make them comparable you have to multiply the energy DR by the damage multiplier applied to the shot. If you had say, just gunslinger 2 in play thats 1.4, which is already considerable, but this can readily become very large, especially as sneak multipliers are included....
It means that a combat rifle with lower DAM will usually outperform a laser rifle with higher DAM, even against targets that claim to have higher ballistic DR.
Along with the crit energy DR bug (which is similar, but worse) its the main reason that lasers always underperform, and fare very poorly later in the game. The rifleman DR penetration not applying to energy happens too, but its small fry compared to this.
EDIT
The variants that do have energy DR displayed on the wiki all have a considerably higher ballistic resistance value. This is likely a trend that extends to the whole family, but as discussed above, isn't really the 'true' value.
I forgot about the funny way energy damage is calculated.
Now I looked a little closer at the wiki page. Like you said, some of the classes of SM do list the energy DR. It is about 2/3 of the ballistic DR.
Oh well. Too complicated. I will just stick to ballistic weapons for SM.
Enraged fogcrawlers being the exception, and even then, its far from certain that energy is better against them!
But, but, but... the laser rifle says it does 72 damage and the combat riofle says it does 49 damage. It HAS! to be better.
Yea. I will give up the laser rifle. I can sell all the cells and buy more ammo for my combat rifle/shotgun. My two favorite guns in the game are the combat rifle and the assault rifle. With the combat shotgun for close up. And a 10mm for easy things like roaches.
Nope. I never ever do melee. I just don't like it. I can't be doing fps if I am not doing fpS. It is not called fpm.
Agree, but i am a long way from getting one of those.
