Fallout 4 loading times take forever... unless I alt tab out then in?
So.. something weird. Can anyone explain?

Loading times in Fallout 4 are ridiculous as hell by the way. I get the tech junkies barking at me saying its because I don't use a SSD. Ok fair enough I guess but I could argue there are loads of AAA times released within the past year that don't take NEARLY as long as Fallout 4 to load from buildings/worlds. I digress...

So whenever I'm inside a building, and leave to go outside to the main world loading times take ages. Weirdly enough I quickly alt tab back out and in and it loads right up? I cant tell if this was a temporary fix since the beginning or not.

No I'm not using any mods
Playing survival mode (again straight vanilla)

The only thing I can think of is its auto saving on exit? I read turning that off makes loading times faster however you cant toggle that on Survival mode, so I don't even think its saving on exit. I dunno, any thoughts?

Forgot to mention, when I tab back in the resolution is messed up, looks chunky and cross hair is out of wack. So i ant tab back out and in real fast and it fixes it.

I've always had issues with the load screen times on transitions. On my old computer, it would gradually take longer as the save file aged until it would just hang indefinitely. The only explanation I was given was that my GPU was substandard, so I made sure my new computer had a freaking awesome graphics card. I have it now, and I literally can't get past the title screen.
The longer you play and the more saves you create cause the long load times, along with how many high texture mods and scripted mods you have running. More isn't always better.
I usually only have about 8 (5 world & 3 dungeon) save slots I rotate through and I regularly delete then and create all new ones to keep them fresh instead of overwriting them all through the whole game.

As for Alt & Tab out, Bugthesda games are notorious for not liking that in the first place.

Turn off cloud saves. That causes problems with this game. But 30 seconds is what you can expect in areas like downtown. There is a mod that can decrease the loading times. Many people say it works well.

The Downtown Boston FPS Fix mod. It's a great one, but it can only do so much. Anytime you get a lot of actors in one area it will slow down the game. Using mods that add a lot of NPCs to the game only compounds the issue.

I had this issue today, and resolved it pretty quickly. Keep in mind that mod conflicts can cause this issue, but that was not what caused it in my case. I had the loading issue, but could load if I tabbed out, and then back in. Near the Corvega Plant, and Boston, I would get crashes. For me, the issue was within my Fallout.ini and FalloutPrefs.ini files. My uGridsToLoad was set to 15, and my uExterior Cell Buffer was set to 290. First of all, that is a bit too high for my computer specs. Second, uExterior Cell Buffer must be set to the following value, or the game will have this loading bug, as well as crashes:
if uGridsToLoad=13, then uExterior Cell Buffer=196=(13+1)²

Using uGridsToLoad=13, and uExterior Cell Buffer=196, should work smoothly on your rig, providing that you don't have too many programs running in the background. When you are finished fixing your .ini files, be sure to go to their properties tabs, and set them to read-only. That way, your edits will be maintained.

EDIT:
I fixed my .ini files, and that seemed to help, but something else that I did made the issue come back. This mod finally solved the issue for me.

This mod makes loading much much faster for me. Actual fixes here... not some ini preset.
