There isn't much need for it in building unless you love energy weapons, but it can be a pain to run out of, so I tend to collect it out of habit.
It is too bad you can not make a forge to smelt into bars.
You are correct from a gameplay point of view however I was speaking in regards to gold as a currency and not as an ingredient.
In pre-war, gold was everything, it was a precious metal and commodity. But in post-war, does it hold the same value and weight? In post-war I noticed there is lack of preserved gold, if i'm lucky I will find some in a bank safe or in some graves but aside from that, it's hard to find them. For instance I found a couple of gold bars in a grave of some dude who apparently wanted to be buried with his wealth, I picked up the bars and I noticed they sell for 8,000 caps! Wowzers. So this got me wondering, does gold bear weight and value post-war? If it's worth 8,000 caps for a couple of gold bars, that would mean people in the commonwealth still value gold. That leads me to ask, is gold something I should continue searching for and stock up on it? One of the things I actually enjoy is searching for precious things ingame and hording them as a testament of my wealth that I can show to others but also to become rich. So if gold fetches for so much caps, should I consider continuing to search for more gold in the commonwealth?
I am not referring to gold as an ingredient but more like gold as a precious metal that can be sold for caps as an alternate to currency just like the pre-war days. I want to avoid spoilers but I found a couple of gold bars in some guy's grave and all together they valued at 8,000ish caps. And because of that, I am wondering if Bethesda actually intentionally did this, to dictate that even in post-war, gold still has a value despite it being scarce and rare. Which leads me to wonder, should I continue gold hunting? I know it's rare but I like hunting for rare stuff. I like that thrill. Should I stock up on all the gold I can find?
Thank you, i'll add that to my to-visit places.
I don't remember how much per bar, probably 400-500. I think it's pretty decent. I haven't found much gold yet on my adventures, just got lucky finding a grave that happened to have many bars. If gold truly holds weight and value in post-war, then I may consider collecting gold because if it sells for 400-500 per piece and I have like 20-30 bars, i'm rich. I am already richer than most people in the commonwealth. I actually had no idea gold was still a precious commodity in post war, I knew it existed but considering people now use caps as a currency, I assume gold was just a rare material and that's all. But based on it's value ingame and how much people are willing to pay for it, it seems gold is still used as a alternate to currency just like pre-war times.
Looks like gold is quite rare, but not as valuable as some of the drugs are.
Yup, it's odd but I never thought people post-war would care to buy it or trade for it in caps. Because we don't really have a proper banking institution in place in the commonwealth, at least I didn't find any, I went to diamond city, bunker hill, far harbor, not one banking institution for currency is present. That means gold is pretty much the same as it was pre-war, more rare now no doubt, but still considered an alternate to currency.
i.e, if you find a lot of it in bulk, it's like winning a lottery, otherwise you're stuck with trading with caps as your main currency.
It's pretty cool to see that gold still bears value post-war and that people are still willing to purchase gold in return for a large sum of caps.
And because of this, I think I will enjoy gold-hunting from now on, knowing that it's worth a lot of caps. Woohoo!
I am a hoarder though, I will probably stock up on a lot of gold and not sell it until I really need to sell it. I love collecting precious metals.
Okay. What about precious gems, do gemstones like diamond exist ingame?
Dammit, I wish there were diamonds
