The Most Dangerous Settlement In The Commonwealth
has got to be the Red Rocket just down the street from Sanctuary. The day I opened it it was attacked by 5 super mutants. They worked their way around to the back where I had just planted 30 foods worth of plants and tore up half of them before I managed to kill them.

I've been noticing the fierce way the forces of darkness try to stomp Red Rocket anytime I try to put someone there, so I decided to make a game of it. This game is called "Hold Red Rocket". Unfortunately I built up Sanctuary before I started work on the filling station, so my defenses are very low, and the settlement has an awful border in its back yard. It has no straight lines, so it's hard putting up a wall to keep out the unfriendlies.

I can only use wells and those expensive powered wells for water, so the girls are going to be thirsty for awhile. But I am determined...well unless I get bored.

There is a spawn point for a mutant patrol nearby, they always march from west to east along a route that takes them right by Red Rocket, that's why there seems to be an attack every time you visit.

As for the people there going thirsty... why? Just set up a caravan from Sanctuary to Red Rocket. Give the caravaneer a nice heavy weapon, everyone gets water and you get backup marching through every few minutes.

I always set up RR as my own personal hideout with my living quarters built on the rooftop with a couple turrets covering the perimeter. No settlers allowed. Just one or two low end turrets are all that's needed for defense because the mutants that march through are always low level. Perhaps they could be a threat if someone were to level up to 50+ with the console before leaving Vault 111... hmm... time to start a new game and run a test.

Unfortunately I'm not a high enough level to run caravans yet. If I can get three powered wells that will be 30 water, and it should take care of the girls' thirst.

1. There is no settlement under attack message if you are already at the settlement (unless you have mods.)

2. Red Rocket can have mobs that spawn at the fluid random encounter just north of Abernathy. Those super mutants will almost always drop Super Mutants Orders, ones spawned to attack a settlement do not have them.

3. You also have what I refer to as fringe mobs that spawn around a settlement. They spawn nearby and harass the settlement. Sanctuary has the raiders that spawn across the bridge, near the water, and by the root cellar. Starlight has some raiders that spawn between Drumlin and Starlight, These mobs are not part of random encounters.

Level cap in the area.

I keep finding dead super mutants in the area. I don't hear shooting, just see new bodies. I have a laser turret high over the road. Maybe it's picking them off while I'm sleeping. I know about the orders, but so far haven't found any. I know that I desperately need oil, and all the merchants suddenly don't have any.

Dude. Its gotta be Sommerville Place and Croup Manor. So many random spawns around those.

Same here, it's my batcave. I keep Ada and Codsworth there since they don't need food and can supplement the turrets I have on the roof.

Tenpines Bluff is the one I always find annoying, due to there almost always being a nearby attack happening when I arrive. Coastal Cottage always seems to have two or three raiders right on top of its north-eastern corner if it's been left for a while. Most trouble at the Slog is actually stirred up by Doc Weathers' caravan, but it does frequently get back to the settlement.

Then there's Egret Tours Marina, with an encounter point a stone's throw north at the broken bridge. And Finch Farm is close enough to the Gunners at Hub City Auto Wreckers that you can hear missiles hit the nearby brahmin herd, while post-main storyline you've got checkpoint attacks to the west.

At some point you realize that the Commonwealth just isn't a great place to raise the kids. :steammocking:

It's a bit too close to the action for my tastes; too much chance of someone wandering in and messing around with my things.

I wonder if I could use a quickload building glitch to run a water purifier over from Sanctuary and put it in Red Rocket.

It should be possible, as I once did the same with a raider tribute chest in several jumps using jet, the main issue is whether it would count towards Red Rocket water production afterwards (moving the raider tribute chest unfortunately didn't allow me to build another one back in Sanctuary).

Vault 88 is the worst for me, I get attacks on it constantly
Spectacle Island. I barely had a mattress down and a couple of carrots in the grand, and the ghouls came in in waves. Like the D Day landings. I literally had not finished looting the bodies when the Gunners came in, same deal, wave after wave. Then the Supermutants, and by the time that raid was over I was out of ammo, out of chems, out of settlers, and out of any desire to continue defending that hell-hole. :-)

I really have to wonder what Bethesda was thinking when they selected the Settlement areas. I mean Coastal Cottage... what a cluster ♥♥♥♥.

What exactly were you supposed to build there? I've seen one nice build in that spot online and it was done with mods.

I've never built at Croupe Manor either, for the same reason basically. Just nothing works for me there.

Coastal Cottage is decent to build with if you spam foundations to flatten it. With Sim Settlements you have ground colored foundations to work with.

Croup Manor is like the easiest settlement defense ever. It has one attack spawn and two rocket turrets obliterates it.

Throw a spotlight in between to increase spotting range and boom.

It appears that different players experience different hot spots at different settlements.

Red Rocket and Spectacle Island NEVER get attacked for me, but some of my other settlements come under attack frequently, and often by heavies (the Gunners, the Automatron gang that wears robot armor, the Mirelurk queen).

Does it matter really? Lets not pretend attacks are more than an inconvenience. I build a wall around every settlement and I'm done. Even when I only played stock, this is how I did it. Attackers can only come from the direction you funnel them into. Put missile launcher turrets up high to retaliate the other sections of the walls.

I get more annoyed when I see the message "soandso is under attack" because I have to stop what I'm doing at the time.

I built six of those powered wells and 2 regular wells, so my 7 girls are well hydrated now. They are producing 40 food a day + the 66 water so Red Rocket is now a worthwhile settlement for me. It is defended--minimally--by around 140 points worth of turrets. The powered wells and the food is enclosed in a large wall with a powered gate, and the super mutants haven't bothered us since their first raid.

The problem with Red Rocket is the lousy arrangement of the buildings. The guns are not able to support each other because buildings get in the way. I have a hard time arranging more than four large machine gun turrets to be self supporting. The attacks can come from ANY direction. It is a very hard spot to mount an effective defense.

I got a message in game saying Abernathy farm was under attack. Fast traveled there and straight in the middle of 4 rad Scorpions. lol. Teach me for not putting a travel mat in the house.
