Slow downloads, why
So I got the game disc of Fallout 4 from a shop recently and had to install it twice for hardware reasons. I am 3 hours away from the second download finishing, although that is what it said an hour ago, and the speed is only 1.2mbps which seems appallingly slow for 2018. Is this normal for games? Sorry, I stopped playing games five years ago and got used to being treated like a valued customer rather than a doormat, so being expected to wait hours at a time for something I have supposedly got on a disc in my hands to start working seems like a pretty insulting business model. Anyone else agree? Can this be improved?

How should we know? Depends strongly on your internet speed, your wlan or lan connection, your pc, other people using the same line, servers where you download, peak times, etc

I agree though on the disc thing. Annoying as hell.

On the other side i enjoy that i don't need to store tons of boxes anymore. I just download wherever i am.

Check your internet speed............. before complaining about download speed.

Check your attitude before telling me to check my internet speed. Don't you think I did this before I went to the trouble of posting a complaint about it? My internet speed is 12.mbps for both upload and download and Fallout 4 is downloading at a tenth this speed. This is not acceptable or reasonable and I think I am within my rights to ask why, and expect a rational answer from an adult. Thank you.

you know 12 megabits a second, is really close to 1.2 megabytes a second

when I get a measure of down load in megabytes I just use a factor of 10 for a quick check if my megebit speced download is OK

10 is not exact but with error correction and packet overhead it is pretty close

I hope this helped

Four hours is still four hours, however you want to spell it, so my point remains.

if you want faster download speeds you will need to get a faster plan (your plan is in megabits, steam reports in megabytes) you are already downloading as fast as you can. this is why your download takes as long as it does

12 mbps I think you mean 12 Mbps

Thats only 12 Mbps = 1.5 MB/s

It would take
3 hours 58 minutes 36 seconds
to transfer 20 Gigabytes
at 1.43 MB/sec

Upper case letters count when stating connection/download speed.

So try doing a proper speedtest and post the results here.

Asking you to check your internet speed (properly) before complaning seemed a rational answer.

Basically the speed depends on many factors others already explained however I will state that recently there have been issues at least in the US that has slowed down nearly all internet traffic starting sometime around the sunday before the recent election.

Some sites are still inaccessable regardless of what service is used to try and reach them.

I will agree when we buy a physical copy even if hooked to steam, windows live, etc. we expect the game except updates done after the set was made to be present not just 4.7 gig of over 20+ gig we then have to download to finish the install. Might as well not have a physical store copy in the first place.

I'd guess its also downloading the texture pack which is aprox 58GB after installed.

I find it ironic however that someone who is using a service that is slower than an average cell phone data plan would say "appallingly slow for 2018"

Then again, could be a cell phone plan (or satellite) they are using?

1. Check your attitude.

2. No, we don't think you checked your speeds before posting. Your whole post is written like someone who doesn't know what they're doing.

3. Have you never downloaded anything from Steam before? How can you not know what is normal for Steam unless this is your very first game. And if it is - that's info we would need to help diagnose your problem.

4. It doesn't matter what your ISP provides. That's just the *maximum* speeds. What individual services provide will vary - and no, its not 'unfair', you're not paying for their infrastructure.

5. You share your pipe with other homes/apartments around you. If one of your neighbors is running a P2P server or everyone is home watching Netflix then you're not going to get the maximum your pipe allows.

6. Its *up to*. Right there in the contract. Up to. Complain all you want, they'll just tell you to go find an ISP that guarantees the max all the time. Which you can't. Because none of them do.

A simple check would be to look at what windows network performance says it is downloading at if you go by steams download speed indicator on the downloads page you have to convert it from bytes to bits.

1. No, you check your attitude, mine is awesome. Never tell me what to do. Thanks. Ever. I was not asking for help - I was criticising the business model that says forcing people on a very reasonable internet connection to wait four ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hours for a game to download and install is unbelievably terrible. Learn to take that criticism, and use it to get better. Don't just patronise the person providing it. It's alll part of growing up.

2. An incorrect assumption, delivered as patronisingly as possible, always hits the spot, does it? I only got internet at this new flat a few weeks ago, and checking speed was the first thing I did. I also checked it not long before posting my post, as I was baffled why it seemed to take all day when it was a real, bought one, not one of the illegal freely downloaded ones from the pirate bay that takes literally a hundredth of the time to download, install, and start playing with complete satisfaction.

3. Did you read my first post? In it, I descibe the scenario as it stands. Have a go. It might enable you to make a non-kneejerk reply that is actually relevant, if not useful. Until you make a sign that you have, and do, I'll ignore further remarks from you apart from correcting the rest of your post below.

4. What? So my internet speed does, or doesn't matter? Make your mind up.

5. No, I don't. I actually watched the technician installing the infrastructure, as there was none when I took up residence a few weeks ago. The rest of the family won't move in for another week, so now, only one device is using the connection.

6. What possible relevance or use is this answer? I didn't ask for your opinion of how my ISP works. I was simply expressing my absolute rejection of being expected to wait for half a day, sometimes an entire day, to enjoy software I already had paid for.
