No go area!
After having played FO4 for many years on PS4 I decided to play it on PC. Thoroughly enjoying the new mods which have given the game a new lease of life. Apart from the problem with having to reset my settings, which refuse to save, each time I play, & not being able to save or turn the game off in the normal way due to options button not working, my main bane is the ''no go area'' in the city. Between & including Monsignor Plaza, Cambridge crater, Triconder, Greentech & across the river along the bank, my game crashes every time I go anywhere near. This is making many quests impossible. Can anyone help shed some light on the problem?

Here's your problem.

What doesnt work is disabling mods mid-game, the (vaulty) information is already baked in your save...just saying

Oldrotorhead1, sorry I'm new to pc & don't understand the question.

Zarah, I appreciate the advice. You're correct in that I did disable a mod that cleared the rubbish from my settlements because it was preventing me from doing the Bunker hill quest - Kessler wouldn't talk! After I had finished the quest I replaced the mod & thought all was well.

The issue with save games and configuration not saving is usually a result of an issue with malware protection or anti virus.

Things like bit defender can block the game from having access to the folder Documents\My Games\Fallout4 where it writes the needed information.

As for crashing while playing removing mods midgame or having conflicting mods can cause this.

Also there is a certain GPU that needs the weapons debris turned off in settings or you can get random crashes.

It's a mod issue . I had the same problem in the same area for about a year . With my heavy workload it took that long to figure out that it 2 mods that did it . I found the offending mods by disabling half a dozen mods at a time before which out mods were the offending mods ( well over 250 mods ) . While I can't the mod names , I do remember of them was an ''landscape'' or tree/grass mod .

What you can do: remove a bunch of mods, outside the problematic area, go there, see if it crashes. Hot candidates are mods that changes locations (even as 'subtle' as audio overhauls) or npc inventories.

That said: a) it's doesnt proof much. game might crash in another location and b) if you want to continue, do at your own risk. As I said, you cant get rid of mods, apart from texture replacers.

where do you have the game installed on your system? if on the C drive the protection junk that windows 10 has is known for causing issues with games such as not saving settings or gamesave, its better to have games installed on a seperate drive or partition

at the very least a folder other than "program files" that most programs select as default during install pretty much anything installed there in windows 10 takes administrative privlages to write to the disk.

Neddy, fortunately I didn't have many mods to sift through! I started a new game after deleting the mod which cleared the settlements,-I'm not sure if we are allowed to name them so I haven't-then I added a workshop mod which among other things, gave me a full save on the favourites & also a sleeping bag save. Everything is working smoothly now. No, no go areas any more! ( but I still cringe when entering that area expecting it to crash! )
