You can skip the heavy weapons if you want since the way the game and armor is factored, your mini guns, etc will do vastly less damage as you progress into the game with bullet sponge foes and stronger armor. Where a .45 automatic rifle can chew threw stuff even at higher levels, a mini gun trying to take out a super mutant warlord is like shooting bubbles at it, even if you have a legendary one. With full perks your 20 damage minigun is going to plink plink stuff compared to a heavier damaging automatic rifle, etc. Even my current playthrough with a 20/20 mini gun/plasma damage and full perks its just a chore trying to kill stuff with it with how damage resistance works, while i can whip out my .308 rifle and take stuff out much quicker.
On easier difficulties the heavy automatics are fine, especially earlier in the game. Trying to take out hard bullet sponge foes on very hard/survial? almost a chore, instead of just having fun shooting stuff.
