he prolly died on his way out, never done the quest
plus i remember him just being buggy anyway with his quest, actions, dialogue, etc. Who knows.
Oh, if that's the case, I'd probably not bother redoing the quest unless it happens right after the event.
It could be some hostile brought him out far enough that he then went after the hostiles at the ironworks when they respawned.
I see it a lot at the slog as they go after that nearby group everytime a merchant drags some hostile close enough to bring the settlers in range of the place they kill it then go after the next one in range of detection This could have happened to jake while at the farm.

I've found other named settlers dead, and wondered, "Aw, fəck…wonder what side mission died with her…."
So I resurrected him using the console. As much as he's a pain in the backside he wasn't a bad guy. And he made a good trader for me.
That's pretty funny, I've not heard of that one. I like Jack, even though I usually side with his father anymore out of greed.
