Stuff not to sell. dont' sell tools, like wrenches, screwdrivers, hammers, you can sell them for a nice price later. Just place a chest near your workbench and store "don't sell" items in them. Also prewar money, stick that in there.
Don't sell energy weapons (lasers, plasma, etc) store those and get scrapper perks to break them down into useful items. Regular weapons don't really break down well even with max scrapper (some cheaper pipe ones are ok), but energy weapons give tons of materials. Save those and once your max scrapper, break them all down.
Near sanctuary.. south is abernathy farm, one person there is a basic merchant. Se of sanctuary south of concord is the diner, 2 potential merchants here, plus trashcan carla nearby who is a 3rd that will be there, or at sanctuary. Some nice early merchants you can run about.
Other npc settlements have merchants you'll want to visit to open them up to fast travel. Diamond city, goodneighbor, etc. So if you aren't making your own settlement trading merchants, you can do run arounds to merchants to offload stuff every so often when you start getting tons of stuff.
Abernathy Farm has Connie.
Trashcan Carla will be at Drumlin, Bunker Hill, or Sanctuary.
Ten Pines can have Lucas Miller or Dr Whathisface.
Covenant has Penny.
Diamond City has like 8 vendors.
Grey Garden has Mr Greene.
