The same thing happened to me, but on the extreme side.
I have 2 monitors, so the PC itself managed to get out of sleep mode, since I saw my desktop on my 2nd monitor.
But the primary one was consistently blank, and I could do nothing. Alt + F4, CTRL+ALT+DEL,
Nothing happened with anything. Clicking on icons on the second monitor didn't do anything either.
I resorted to reseting the PC and guess what. It killed my C drive. Luckily, my PC coud restore it, and thank god I didn't loose any data in the end, but it is definitely a possibility, so people be aware.
Steam does not work with sleep mode. Fallout barely manages to alt-tab, on its own. Combine the two means:
turn your computer off properly if you're not using it. shut down your game, then steam, then your computer in that order if you're walking away from it for any length of time. Neither the game nor Steam plays well with hibernation.
Bit of clarification:
I was not trying to shut the PC down. I just walked away while "playing", only pausing the game to take a phone call, and when I went back, the PC was unable to react to anything.
Trying to close the game, or launch any other program, alt+f4, nothing. Not even to clicking my mouse, but the mouse itself moved. Reseting the computer was only my last dich effort to make my pc do anything as I was stuck in basically limbo.
The game window was oich black, my second monitor had my desktop.
This is the only game anything like this ever happened. I am also not sure if it is a fallout 4 only issue or not, as I don't play 76 and Wolfenstein never had a problem like this, and that is a bethesda game, so I know it is not a bethesda issue.
The devil is in the details....enough said.
Grab your pc
And strap that pc with duck tape around your stomach now you have a mobile desktop and won’t have to worry about ever leaving the game
If this would be a computer/windows issue, this would happen regularly with multiple games.
And this NEVER happened before.
I have w7 and don't use hibernation mode, and have walked away to make dinner and start eating before I remember oh yeah I was doing something... Perfectly fine.
But as stated before: Steam nor this game play well with actual hibernation on a computer. It's likely a combination of those factors that led to it happening 'this time'. I'd suggest entirely turning hibernation mode off, or use a different power profile if you're on a laptop plugged in.
