I gave items to Dogmeat, sent him to Sanctuary Hills for an hour and my items are not there

They should still be with him. He'll be in one of the doghouses around sanctuary if you still have them around. I've sent dogmeat back to Sanctuary for a good 2 weeks and came back to find him with all the junk I stored on him.

The Vault-Tec DLC has a handy companion tracker.

Barring that:

Copy and Pasted:

Open the console by using the TILDE key (~)
Type "prid 001d162" (hit Enter)
Type "moveto player" (hit Enter)
Press TILDE (~) again to close the console.

I do this via a mod, and I'm very particular not to use console to avoid problems but I have not ever had an issue in doing this. (Note that if a companion is messed up for some reason from another Script (i.e. Piper, Nick or Danse most notably) they will be moved to you in the same state.)

It takes more than an hour for him to travel - its not instantaneous and could day several game days before he gets to where you sent him.

I meant, a real-life hour. Maybe even 2

You can try to move him to your player with console. But that "one real life hour" is kinda relative because it depends of from which location you sent him away. And how fast the companion is. Some are just strolling around, taking their time.

If I recall right, I sent Cait away (her place was still at Combat Zone) because I had to do something in Diamond city. That happened when I was south of Diamond city. The first apartment blocks of Boston was in front of me. I did my thing in Diamond city. I was there for at least a full ingame day. When I went to Combat Zone afterwards (was on my way to Goodneighbor) I could not find her. I even checked every nooks and canny in that big building. I decided to leave the building and use the console to move her to me.

Guess who appeared when I was outside?

Thing is, I had already seen Dogmeat at Sanctuary Hills. But when I traded things with him, he didn't have anything on him

that is weird I admit. I used Strong once and he still has some items after re-using him again some weeks later. The container should not be empty. Might be an occassional bug. I only know about that little merchant bug where they sometimes appear without inventory. Reloading the cell seems resolving it.

Better you send dogmeat to Red Rocket he plays around the gas station and never leave that area. Really easy to find your companion at the beginning.
