Romance him and then he'll start calling you "babe". (I've avoided that on all my playthroughs so far thankfully.)

I'm pretty sure something like that would tread into "Gooification" territory with my plasma rifle.
:steamhappy:
Poor ol' Garvey. I put off the "Taking Independence" castle quest for ages, he must have said whenever I accidentally got too close to him "Do you think we're ready to take the Castle?" about 100 times before I caved in and said "ALRIGHT I'LL TAKE THAT BLOODY CASTLE FOR YOU", although I made sure the mirelurk queen spat all over him while we were there.

Preston was written to be arrogant bordering on truculent. He has "issues." And, this isn't a spoiler.

Eh, this has been a problem since games like this were first developed. In just about any in the genre, you are the SAVIOR OF THE WORLD AND/OR UNIVERSE AND/OR REALITY AND/OR SOME LITTLE BACKWATER TOWN IN MISSOURI, you save everybody and every thing ... and yet later in the game, some azzhat guard in Skyrim still asks sardonically if somebody stole your sweet roll. Bastard, have a taste of my ebony greatsword upside your stupid head, and I'm still the Chosen One, so pfft.

One day, technology will be advanced enough that when the player achieves that level of success, people everywhere will treat you with proper respect and awe. That day is not here yet, so, "Keep your sticky fingers to yourself, outlander."

Ugh. I"m not sure if I'd hate that or the "babe" designation more. I just want to go around and explore places, meet new and interesting ppl and find new and interesting situations. I don't want to be a savior or someone's lackey (like a lot of the quests expect). I don'[t want the world to bow down before me or to have someone treat me like their personal errand girl/boy. Just treat me decently and with respect, unless I don't treat you that way.

I don't expect every NPC to do that bc there are jerks in the world but the jerks and sycophants should be the exceptions IMO.

That's the other "because it's always been this way" aspect of the genre that irks me: how not a single person seems to be able to do anything for themselves, other than the playable character, with a handful of exceptions. Granted, that is what the games are made for, but you mean to tell me in the entire Boston (or D.C. or wherever) area, there aren't any people who are at least good at something besides complaining about their lots in life, and oh by the way could you go kill those molerats at the movie theater because they're just too icky, now back to complaining, and oh yes, you did it, but I'm not paying you jack for it. And so on, and so forth.

Unfortunately, as real-world history has shown, it's the jerks and the sycophants who always seem to breed the most, so there are more of them than those who just want to explore, etc. So the world goes, so does the Fallout-verse, I guess.

It's also why I hate the label "Lone Wanderer" as is given to some of the PCs in the genre. Hard to be lone anything when people keep bugging you to go on some mindless fetch quest for a couple hundred bottlecaps and a bus token. And yet, I do enjoy the games, so like most folks who play them, we all be out of our minds, I suppose.

This is sad for Beth, IMO. They weren't great about it in Daggerfall but you had townsppl who did things that weren't related to the PC. What a concept. Morrowind wasn't bad bc half the ppl were contemptuous of you bc you were an outlander but they didn't try to kill you immediately. Their contempt made sense in the context and, to me, was much better than having a bunch of suck-ups who do nothing but complain or ask you for favors (like you describe). And Vivec, the Blades, and Azura were pretty clearly trying to manipulate you for their own ends so you had a motive to try to figure out why they were manipulating you. Much better than some quest-giver saying "X is being shady. Go hack their terminal/steal their ledger/bribe their rival to find out why and report back to me."

Beth could have taken that farther in their later games. I guess they did try with Oblivion (but failed miserably) and the "radiant AI". But the whole game world seemed to revolve around you. It was a step back from Daggerfall IMO.

I liked how the Ultimas handled it.

This was one of the things I've been most disappointed about in RPG development. I was hoping that they'd make NPCs more unique and interesting but they've made them less well-rounded and likelike. All they do is give quests or try to kill you. Or sometimes try to sleep with you (but that['s one-dimensional too).

It's almost as if every NPC has become so agoraphobic that they just can't seem to move outside their tiny part of the world, so they turn to the lone wanderer to do the things they no longer can. Maybe it's a parallel to modern society, where people tend to be connected to many online, but few in real life. So, they have their groceries delivered, they go to virtual parties in an MMO and engage in faux-relationships via Facebook.

I prefer party-based RPGs (Final Fantasy VI is a personal favorite) now, I guess, since they tend to make up for the NPCs neediness. At least one of the folks the PC travels with will be interesting, anyway. Maybe not FFXV, but that's a different kettle of fish. Bro power, super-sized.
