how to speed up the character's walking speed?
Except when following Mr. Handy, the walking speed is at glacial pace. Is there a way to speed this up? I am too old to take the time necessary to saunter everywhere...

There should be a toggle to change between running and walking speed. There's also the sprint key, but that uses your action points. I can't remember right now which keys are the ones you need (probably 'z' and 'shift' respectively), check your keybindings to verify this.

If you are using a PS/Xbox controller, running would be toggled by pressing down on the left thumbstick.

Occassionally on a PC keyboard I would accidentally press Caps Lock, which slowed down my character's walk as if I was holding down L-shift.

At least on PC, there is both a toggle (CapsLock by default for me) that switches between walking and running (not sprinting) and a button you can hold down to temporarily switch ("C" by default for me).

In the first section of the game when you're still in your pre-war house, instead of switching between walking and running, you switch between walking and walking slightly faster (at about the pace NPCs walk). There doesn't seem to be any way to access this faster walk later in the game.
