Biology 101--we make it icky, so you don't have to.
They changed them for fallout 4 because they wanted that first encounter to be survivable by someone at the level they expected them to be when they ran into that one.
I recall in other fallout games running into a deathclaw usually ended in fleeing through terrain that confused them or a quick death when suprised by them.
In Fallout 4 its just run a short distance shoot repeat until the deathclaw is dead or we run out of ammo.
With enough ammo we can use anything ranged to kill it (though it will take a while) as long as we do not get stuck on something when running or otherwise let it catch up to us.
I thought they were pretty scary in New Vegas. Tended to lean more on their reptillian aspect, think they were taller and stiffer like some sort of lizardman.
Now they kind of remind me of large cats, particularly when they grapple me over and over.
could be. They did change a lot of things and it does seem they act more like cats playing with their food when they catch us than they did in the previous games.
Well, that's scary as hell. Who wants to be the playtoy of an angry uber-Siamese? They're bastards when they're slipper-size, let alone the dimensions of a dump truck. Some really sick scientist apparently made a chimera creature featuring the DNA combo of every regularly pyst-off creature in the greater Boston area. I'm sure there's some Red Sox fans in there as well. Mwa-ha.
They do look more naturally reptilian overall, which does detract somewhat from their unnatural and monstrous nature.
Here you go
