That said, making your own city plans in conjunction with place everywhere/scrap everything and Transfer Settlements is a legit solution, and I've certainly had a lot of fun with my personal builds. Unless you're really into the homebuilding mechanics (I quickly found I loved settlements, but not the minutia of designing homes for 15+ settlers) I'd recommend using Sim Settlements and it's addons sooner rather than later.
Special mention to IDEKs logistics station which automates supply lines into an efficient system, adds a logistics locker across settlements, and supplements the supply line redistribution system for food and water with a more efficient system.

If I stick to using the 'dirtier' pieces, I should be able to build something tha looks possible in the FO4 world.
