How do I break down scrap items into materials?
Hi, I'd like to break down scrap items.

When I go to a chem station I notice that gold does not highlight for things needing it even though I have gold lighterrs and stuff that contains gold, so I'd like to know how to get the gold out of the scrap?

Thanks

Just build/craft the desired item, scrapping is automatic.

Building by default consumes an item for -just one- material it offers.
In the case of your lighter, you'd sacrifice the oil and steel ( i think?) to get the 1 gold.
You're best off dropping everything you want to scrap, then *manually* scrapping it in workshop mode.

Could you tell me how to manually scrap items in workshop mode please. I'm having trouble getting some items to auto scrap.

It doesn't waste materials when auto-scrapping. To test it, put only a handfull of watches and lighters in your workshop and then craft a few items that require those parts, you'll wind up with leftover scrap.

Auto-scrap means the game takes the items apart when needed is all.

However, if you want to manually scrap items, remove them from your workshop and drop them on the ground inside your settlement (make sure its a nice flat surface to make things easier), then go into building mode and target each item on the ground and hit whatever key you have bound to scrapping stuff. You can manually scrap weapons, armor as well as the usual junk/scrap items this way, its a non-mod, no console commands required way of increasing a settlements build limit on top of the usual scrapping bit.

Thank you very much.

Could I get some info on how things are stored in workshops please. I notice that each bench allows you to store items inside it. Are all these items then shared across benches?

Items stored in one chem station will allow access to those items in another chem station? etc.

For instance, say you need aluminium and adhesive to add a mod. If you have a couple of aluminium cans and a couple of duct tape in the workshop they will be used up to create the mod. The mod will just use as many as needed. The rest are safe.

Yes. But in that settlement only. There is something called a supply line when you get more settlements. Two chem stations in two different settlements need a supply line.

All crafting stations share their inventory with a settlement's general workshop storage.

Each settlement has its own workshop, yout can connect settlements together by setting up supply lines. Having a supply line connecting, for example, Sancuary and Grey Garden, will link their workshops together. This means crafting materials are shared between them.

Yeah that does happen but I'm noticing that gold isn't higlighting even though I have things containing gold so I think something isn't working right somewhere.

Wrong leftovers get placed into your workshop.

If you want to scrap everything into the base materials so you only have raw materials in your workshop you have to dump it all onto the ground and scrap it.

There is a mod called scrap grinder at Nexus that will scrap stuff without dropping on the ground.

Don't listen to the trolls, auto-scrap wasting materials is a known bug.

It's best to press TAB, press R over the items you want to scrap.
Then press E on the workshop and manually press R on each item as it lays on the floor.

Others will tell you this has been fixed or was never a bug, but there's literally thousands of posts proving it is. Trust the evidence, not some halfwit on the forums.

Or you can just see how it works for you personally.

I've never had this issue, myself, but you won't see thousands of posts about it working fine, because people don't make posts to complain about it if they're not having a problem.

Notice the topic he linked is from close to two years ago and even then the issue was for the PS4 and NOT the PC.

Once again he failed to read the information given and immediately turned to throwing insults and arguing with other community members.

Everyone just needs to report him.

Wrong. In the 3 years since this game was released, i've never seen -anyone- contradict the fact that this bug exists.

Not until today.
This thread.

Everyone who contradicts it is a proven troll.
That's just fact of matter.

I ran into this myself just in the past hour because i got cocky and thought i had enough copper.
My workbench interface said i had 100+ when i was in sanctuary. Created a supply line to red rocket and all of a sudden boom, couldn't even create 1 Large Generator and 2 purifiers before i noticed Copper wasn't lit up.

Because i didn't have enough.

edit; Red Rocket was completely and utterly empty before creating the supply line, it's not a supply bug.
