Preston bad at shooting? lol missing all the time
Just wondering if it was some RNG going on or what; but I've never tried The Gravy as a Companion in all this time - so I did just now and boy, he couldn't the ground by falling... He's seriously missing almost every shot - I laughed when he yelled TO ME "Short, Controlled, Bursts!" haha okay pal

I get the guy has a lot on his mind, he is putting basically the entire population of the entire region on his shoulders/mind, but man should I try give him a different weapon or what? heh

This is on Survival Mode (if it means he is 'bad' there or something)... Just wondering

Thanks for any ideas

he is amazing, isn't he.
how is it that he was the last minuteman with that horrible marksmanship.
i do better than that with my off hand, and i'm not ambidextrous.

Give him a decent sniper rifle and he will perform a bit better. His stock weapon sucks.

that could be.

i'll try this one:

Well, he does make you General, probably for that reason alone. That and we have to remember the Minutemen broke apart...so it's not too suprising that a lesser skilled 'loyal' member is simply doing what he can to keep on the good fight.

His aim though...never noticed. Mostly because I bring companions along just to make sure I'm not the only one getting shot at...not nessiseraly for their abilities.

He is quite bad at shooting any weapon. BGS gave these guys default weapons, but apparently not any extra perks for them.

I am using this mod, which does even a bit too good job with them. That's okay, because my leveled lists are custom as well. It is fine by me for Piper to swipe the ground with her automatic laser pistol, or Preston sniping approaching enemies from far, when they are using far better armor and weapons than in vanilla game.

Better Companions - No Conflicts

Go for it. I've never used those mods but almost anything is a better option than his stock gun. You should check out Ilja's mod because he's right. Preston will still miss a lot even with a sniper.

They all seem to miss a lot. And they will continue shooting non-stop after an enemy ducks behind cover, like running behind a wall. If I gave them a weapon, I keep screaming at them to stop wasting the ammo. Never seems to help. :( Then when they do have a clean shot, they will run up and melee instead. GRRrrrrrrr.

I believe this game has a basic suppression feature where if you or a companion fires at the cover an enemy is behind they will be "suppressed" meaning they will stay in cover until you or your companion stops shooting at them.

I like how companions and combat work in the game, and since I know they go through a lot of ammo I either use companions infinate ammo from Nexus Mods, or I just cheat in "X" amount of ammo and give it to them, or I just give them multiple weapons and once one runs out of ammo they'll switch to the next best weapon provided the ammo is there.

Seen the thread and video i made, regarding Energy weapons?
It's the laser musket. It has some really ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ bad runs sometimes, like i've died repeatedly for a solid 20 minutes trying to use before i just went "♥♥♥♥ it" and fatboyed the area.

I don't understand why he is so inaccurate with a single shot weapon

I just give my companions photon boosted wounding laser shotguns. Even if they can't hit their targets, they'll still do damage, at least.

seriously, do people even bother to READ threads anymore?
LASER WEAPONS MISS MORE.

It seriously gets so bad they can very easily get you killed. I have it on video even, proven with both laser musket and Final Judgment.

Thanks for all the great input - it's nice to feel that I'm not the only one who thinks he's so bad haha

I'll try a sniper weapon and something else, too

That is interesting (that they may not have ANY Perks (Companions))

Thanks again, all

wounding boosted laser shotguns don't NEED to hit, that's why i use them. a wounding combat shotgun is nice but the dot from boosted laser shotguns is better imho

So I should just cheat my way through the game? Cheat mods or console cheats? For everything?

Hell No

There is a big difference between getting to the end of a game and beating the game. I son't want no garbage particapation trophey. I want to actually win.

"or I just give them multiple weapons and once one runs out of ammo they'll switch to the next best weapon provided the ammo is there."

This idea is acceptable. But, I just buy the ammo they need. The gams can give you plenty of money to spend. In the early game they get an upgraded .38 pipe rifle. Amazing how well it works. Later they get an upgraded .45 Combat Rifle when I no longer need .45 ammo. Much later they ... No idea. Never been above 60 yet. I keep restarting too d@mn much.

If I may pop back in, I've played this Survival Character a bit more and Preston automatically picked up a .38 cal Pistol for himself - and he seems to be doing better with that, heh - I wonder if Companions (AI) 'intuitively' pick up things they are 'good' at?

Or perhaps it's just something that is a bit better Damage/Accuracy/etc; an "Upgrade" for them?

Just thinking out loud... Thanks again for the input here
