Ultra-Light Marine is the best for stealth characters (And has the best unique set/pieces), and is probably the best for Guns-bazing tanks (With Mods besides weight). However, I would recommend Marine if you frequent the Island or the Glowing Sea due to its fairly good radiation resistance. However, there is an armor better than it. The Disciples Metal armor outclasses every other armor in the game when fully upgraded, surprisingly. I still recommend Marine armor (as the weight for Disciples is almost double it, for around a 10-25 resistance increase, and a lack of radiation resistance)

it seems more common to get a full set of "Legendary" synth armour, because towards the end of the vanilla game you obviously kill more synths than anything else and encounter more legendary ones.

But overall, Heavy Metal still gives the best flat out mitigation overall. Period. Even Marine armour is only 5 more physical but a lot less energy defence
Nope, Synth armor actually has the best overall damage and energy resistance in the base game when fully modded. Order of Armor Tiering in the base game Synth > Combat > Metal > Leather > Raider.

Ultimatley it depends on your build, if you mean armor that just provides the best damage reduction I think that is the marine armor still, though maybe a nuka world armor is better than it now. But as far as legendary bonuses go, it will always be dependant on what type of fighting you do, for instance any damage reduction armor for me is effectively useless weight as I do a stealth build with heavy focus on silenced sniping 1 shot 1 kill headshots, if forced into close combat I pull out a silenced sidearm use cover and continue with headshots, if outnumbered and surrounded in CQC I go loud and proud with grenades, with all these tactics I should rarely if every be hit.

If you using a tanking build the armor I think is amazing would almost assuredly get you killed.

Dude i'm level 20 and i got Heavy Metal armour from Gunners.... how the hell do you not know what the best armour is by level 82? Clearly this is the best stuff around. Except for the stat bonuses it even beats out Destroyers' armour for flat damage reduction...

Dude, all the heavy armor are great, but for flat damage the marine armor is the "heaviest", destroyers I beleive is sturdy armor.

I take it you are fairly new to fallout 4, and so weren't aware of the slightly hidden light/sturdy/heavy armor mods.

Looking at the wiki marine does still seem to offer the best defense (assualt version) with the heavy operators armor being a fairly close second and then heavy synth armor seems to be third, hard to tell given the format of the wiki unfortunately.

No, i'm talking about "Heavy Metal Combat Armour" which is over 150 damage reduction. I don't remember the energy rating because synths are so easy to sneak up on it just honestly doesn't matter
Kalsu 18 AGO 2018 a las 8:59 a. m.
It depend on the damage you're trying to mitigate. Check the armor wiki pages. I think combat armor is the most balanced of the bunch and synth/nuka armor are at the top , if i remember right.

TBH i use ballistic weave baseball uniform, and legendary ultra lightweight heavy leather armor. i would reccomend if you are going for stats not looks then i would go synth heavy armor with ballistic weave underarmor and hat.

Pure_Phoenix I would strongly suggest you read the armor stats in the link I provided, because your a little off.

To the OP, The Tosser brought up a great point I spaced on, if you are looking for the best overall damage reduction BW clothes that can have over armor, using heavy over armor is going to be without a doubt the best by a long shot.

Oh crap, Marine armour actually has *slightly* more energy resist than it's physical.
What the actual crap? That is overwhelmingly OP ammirite?
So what do we recommend next? Nerd Rage? or some other armour/energy perk with Marine armour? What's the most common damage type you come across once you finish the vanilla game?

Because whether you side with the institute or not... energy damage is your biggest worry in vanilla. Minutemen, synths and BoS all prioritise energy weapons.

I LOVE heavy metal armor but IMHO its too heavy even with ultra light weight lining to be practical in survival mode, i used to just wear the legs and chest with leather arms (to offset energy resist and weight) but its too incrediby heavy to be practical while taking loot.
