Edit- In the future, to try things in the game that you might not be sure of, just make a save beforehand so you can reload the game with no worries.
So if I leave cait in the combat zone for now she will just stay there until I get her as a companion ? Can I send her back to this spot if I pick her up and want to replace her with another companion ?
You're much better off picking one settlement, and sending them all there when you dismiss one for another one.
I use Tenpines bluff since it's one of my smaller settlements. But regardless of which settlement you choose, you will always know where they are if you want to travel with them again because they will all be at the same location. [Or if you forget to clean out their inventory before dismissing them.]
The exceptions to this (at least for me), are Nick Valentine and Piper. I always choose the cancel option so they go back to Diamond City, since that's where they belong. Because once you send them to a settlement, there is no option for them to go back to Diamond City. And Nick has the Detective agency to run and Piper has her kid sister.
(TBH Piper is a pretty bad guardian for Nat, constantly running off for days at a time.)
