Companion Cait
Hi again guys. I wandered around and decided to go explore the combat zone as I had this miscellaneous quest available. I ran throught lof of raiders, and after clearing the combat zone I see that CAIT is avaiable as a companion.

Now Cait is hanging in the combat zone. If I ask her to join me where is my dogmeat going to go ? If I have her follow me and want the dog again, where will she go back ?

The only companion I had acess to until now is the dog and Codsworth. I only used the dog up until now. I still have not started piper mission so I guess she will be my next target as a companion.

So basically, what happens with companions when you ''change'' your companions for another one ?

You get a menu of all your settlements when dismissing a companion for another one. You can either choose one of those to send them to, or if you just close the menu without choosing they will go back to the last place they were at when you made them your companion.

Send dogmeat to Sanctuary (or whatever settlement you want), then go there and build him a doghouse (and try to find him a dog bowl to put next to it). That way you can almost always find him near his doghouse. If there's more than one doghouse in a settlement, he will spend some time in all of them, so if you can't find him in one, he's in a different one. Just recycle all the doghouses except one and that's where he'll always be.

Edit- In the future, to try things in the game that you might not be sure of, just make a save beforehand so you can reload the game with no worries.

Thanks for the input guys.

So if I leave cait in the combat zone for now she will just stay there until I get her as a companion ? Can I send her back to this spot if I pick her up and want to replace her with another companion ?

If you have the vault tec dlc you can built the management terminal and it has an option to flag your companions for you. So if you lose one somewhere you can track them

Yes and Yes. But as you will see it would be mean to send Cait back to the Combat Zone. Send her to your biggest settlement after you have used her up.

Yes, she'll stay in the CZ until you actually recruit her, but after that you can't send her back if you dismiss her, you have to send her to one of your settlements.

As the game progresses and you get more companions, it can be tough to remember where they all are, (assuming you keep sending them back to their original location).
You're much better off picking one settlement, and sending them all there when you dismiss one for another one.
I use Tenpines bluff since it's one of my smaller settlements. But regardless of which settlement you choose, you will always know where they are if you want to travel with them again because they will all be at the same location. [Or if you forget to clean out their inventory before dismissing them.]

The exceptions to this (at least for me), are Nick Valentine and Piper. I always choose the cancel option so they go back to Diamond City, since that's where they belong. Because once you send them to a settlement, there is no option for them to go back to Diamond City. And Nick has the Detective agency to run and Piper has her kid sister.
(TBH Piper is a pretty bad guardian for Nat, constantly running off for days at a time.)
