Is it possible to have multiple games?
I'm going to start a new game in fallout 4, but I don't want to erase my old saves. Is there a way to avoid erasing the old ones?

As far as I'm aware (at least on a PC system), the game doesn't normally erase your saves unless you deliberately attempt to do so.

Making a new character will result in there being new saves associated with that character, but the old ones will still exist, and when loading a game you can switch between characters and select the one you want.

Saves are sorted by character names.

I have about 50 saves scattered across various names.

haha I was trying to be sarcastic because you have so few saves.

I play Survival only, so it only keeps like 3 per character (+1 for every X amount of play time on the character.)

I similarly have a bunch of characters, but since I don't play survival and have a near-addiction to regular saving, I have to make sure I clear out some space occasionally if I don't want a really bloated save directory.

I'm not sure if it's precisely by names; the savegames have a different code string as the beginning of their file name, but I haven't tried making a new character with the same name as an older one to see if it gives them the same code.

Oh it is by name. You cna reuse the same names and they get saved seperately as logn as you started a new game. If you go back to say exit Vault 111 and play from there it keep the saves in the name. If you load a Vault 111 exit save and rename it goes into a new name folder as well.

I have reused names quite often because once I ditch a character I rarely ever go back to one unless I am testing something.

Um, you just said reusing the same names would get them saved separately. Doesn't that suggest that it saves them by an independent code, rather than by the literal name?

For example, if I make a character, name them Bob in the prewar section, and keep that name, then make a second character, and name them Jake at first, then Bob once they exit the vault, do I see the saves for both of them together when they're both named Bob?

I should note that the game also separates characters according to their normal/survival mode status. With no change in name, a character who saves in survival mode will have a separate entry when selecting which character to load (with it marked as being survival mode). For example, if Bob goes into survival mode, you'll have "Bob" and "Bob [Survival]".

EDIT: I just tested it. The game is perfectly happy to have two different characters with exactly the same name, and gives each of them their own section for savegames.

You need a name to get the code :p

Indeed, but it's not just the name that produces the code. Multiple characters with the same name have different codes, and a survival version of a character has a different code to the non-survival version of the same character, even without any change in the name.
