a bit of help with settlements please?
I came out of FO4 years back because I found creating beds for Sanctuary folk, dealing with water pumps, finding food etc seemed to break the flow of the game. Well, now I am back and I have the settlements mods, but so far I am being asked to create beds and lug them around to find a suitable spot to park them etc, which feels no better now than it did before. I suppose having the settlements mods installed, I imagined it would all happen without me needing to do anything, and I could come back and see changes.. what am I not doing or understanding??

Sim Settlements is the only mod to auto do stuff. All the others just help 'you' to make nicer settlements.

Workshop Framework has auto-assign controls but it is overall simpler than Sim Settlers as it is limited to things such as defense and farming. The player still has to do all of the construction work with WF.

If you are using Sim Settlements, then you still need to either:
- Lay plots for settlers, where they can build beds for themselves.
- Use Rise of the Commonwealth city plan, appoint Leader and make sure autoassign is ON.

ahh, well that is helpful. I guess I was expecting too much. I have a holotape for one of them ( I have Homemaker and Sims Settlements) and it seemed to be set up to tell me what progress had been made, so, I expected feedback.. So, last time I was in Sanctuary I put three or four water pumps out, but now, returning from the ArcJet quest, I am being asked to build a well - and you say I have to create plots..by clearing land and then...?? I have not done that.. so ways to go, thank you folks :)

Plots are present in your menu, if you are using Sim Settlements. Just place them on the ground and make sure they are powered (agriculture does not need to be). Settlers will start building their own homes.

SS also has interior plots, so you can use houses as well. :)

If you weren't using SS, then tell us what is going on.
If you are using SS and need more help, then just ask.

tbh if you got simsettlements you mightaswell get the rise of the commonwealth addon.
this will enable you to assign leaders to settlements so they build themselves if you dont feel like building it for them.

the sanctuary quest will be completed over time if you use the blueprint for sanctuary but it will require you give it time to grow on its own.
Sometimes you might have to gift them water/drugs to get their needs sorted for a few days and a happiness boost so they upgrade the city.

I am using Three-In-One version of SS, which includes SS, RotC and IR. I am not really using RotC much, but SS and IR are in heavy use.

Settlers also need adequate amount of junk to upgrade the settlement, if you are playing with RotC. IR plots can generate a lot of it on it's own, but you can always gift it for them as well. Salvage Beacons (linked below) allows an option to directly gift the junk for the settlement it is sold.

Temporary happiness boosts can indeed increase the speed of upgrades, or at least productivity in settlements.

apart from loading the holotape and setting it to do things automatically and give me feed back ( IIRC) I have not seen any evidence of how the mods work in the game - I need to look more closely at the options perhaps. As I said at the beginning, settlement building seems like a distraction to me - but I feel obligated to see the Concord folk settled, and there must be a mechanism for adding folk and creating more settlements later, when the time is right, so it might develop a more interesting aspect as time passes. I just need to understand better what to do I guess. Yes, will look out for that mod IIja, thankyou.

sounds interesting IIja - I like the idea of collecting junk and putting it to use, just want someone else to do the building.. :)

These might help you.

Sim Settlements - Holotape

You can find in-depth and quick tutorial videos from here.

As I said, you can ask help from here, or from forum. I am part of the SS Support Team and moderator for SS forum, so I will see questions either way.

Have fun.

thank you IIja, have just downloaded the beacons mod, also quieter settlements and alternative settlements - expect to use them later, but for now I shall look at the two links you have given me, appreciated :)

generally speaking I just made bare bones settlements.

you go to a settlement you set up a supply line.

you make a bunk house. wooden structures ceiling and roof, maybe some walls, stack it high with stairs so they don't take up actual real estate, fill it with beds, put 9 turret 2 on top. for 72 defense

have the bunk house wall off your destructables, your crops, throw down 12 pumps. throw down enough food (mutfruit/tatos/corn) i think comparable 36 food which is 36 mutfruit or 72 corn/tatos. and have it walled off self contained with the bunkhouse. and the generator and beacon, and its done. quick glue farm settlement producing stuff for 13 people to do.

you don't get overly complicated. you don't think about it or make it neat. you build most of it it above ground in the air just need to figure out where to put the plants.

nothing fancy works everywhere.

oh and also need a Brahmin feed tray.

eventually I get artillery for 1 more worker position

to make the turrets is oil, cuircuitry and gears. you get the oil from cutting fluid. you get the cuircuitry from scavanging turret and robot parts and you get the gears I guess theres salavagable junk from gears.

to make the pumps requires a paltry amount of stuff, mostly cement bags 1 bag for 8 pumps. piles of bags in a few places but most junk shops have a few. and its not like you need many. just 2 bags per settlement

to make the food, just need to have food in your other settlements, so it will make itself. run to tato settlement A pick 72 tatos, go to Settlement B plant 72 tatos. etc.

to make bunk house you need wood, cloth and steel. I normally get enough wood and steel from salvaging the settlement trees and cars and whatnot. the cloth I get from salvaging cigarettes, cigars and pre war money. you can find lots of pre war money in certain areas, theres like 150 in the bank outside the super duper mart in its registers and in the bag out back. enough for 30 beds

and then just the generator and beacon which has a couple rare stuffs but its only one per settlement so not really an issue. crystal is mostly found in cameras. and crystal decanters.

so settlement has 12 farming positions, 12 pumps, 2 turrets, 1 supply line runner, 1 generator small, 1 beacon, 8 turrets, 1 artillery, 1 bunkhouse and 30 beds. and 1 brahmin feed trough.

no decorating. no thought.

just stick that up and call it a day.

you get more than 14 settlers I generally put them on scavenging stations if i bother finding them (use a bell or a DLC terminal. but sticking some guard stations and equipping those settlers might be more effective. or putting up trading stations.

but normally I throw that stuff down, and mostly forget about the settlement and it will be fine. producing me mild amounts of fertilizer and glue and water which adds up with them in aggregate.
pawzisme Oct 9, 2018 @ 6:20am
thankyou red225 - you make it sound quite easy and once I have got the basics perhaps I will get comfy with it - but I would want my settlements to be clean and neat and properly made, I hope that is possible.. be a while before I get where you are I think :)
