Companion was wearing power armor, I sent them home, and now the armor is gone
So, I'm doing some quests in Far Harbour, and I found a suit of T-51 armor with the red Vim paint. Thought that was pretty cool, already have a green one, maybe I can collect them all if there's more. I send my companion home, while they're wearing the armor, but when I get home, they're not wearing it.

What's the deal?

Thanks for reading, any help or tips would be appreciated.

Welp. That sucks. Thanks for the help, mysterious stranger.

You can fast travel with a companion while they're wearing power armor and there's no problem. But if they are wearing power armor and you just send them somwhere, don't expect them to still be wearing the power armor when you get there at some later time. Don't even expect to find that power armor. So you can load a prevoius save or just accept that that suit of power armor is gone. On the brighter side, while the red and green VIM power armor suits look good sitting in your collection, they are actually pretty weak compared to the power armor you should have by the time you get to Far Harbor. BTW those are the only 2 VIM PA suits in Far Harbor.

Yeah, I have travelled with PS equiped companions with no trouble. I think they shift to a different script then they get where you send them so the armour gets dropped somewhere nearby. I have found armour sitting outside a settlement and have had it disappear complrely. I just had a bug where all the armour I collected from locations teleported back to those locations and I had to go get them again.

They reach a point in their long journey home where they exit the armor, probably at cell Travel markers (Yellow ones near doors and worldspace "doorways" in the CK, like the one that takes you to and from Far Harbor).

For future reference, fast travel to your preferred settlement with them in the armor, have them get out of it, then send them somewhere. Only way to keep your armor.

OP, if you read the correct terminal at the Vim factory, you now have the Red Vim paint job available to you at a PA station. It can only be painted on T-51 PA.

UPDATE: I found the armor!! Longfellow left it in Far Harbour at the end of the pier. Never doing that again, that's for sure.

YO! Your discovery gave me an idea. I had Curie (Synth) in some sweet Pink Racer T45 (Don't complain, it was my first PA suit and I have a bit of a crush on it. :-D ). I traded her for someone else. She shows up at Sanctuary buck naked!!!

I went back to where I sent her home and no power armor. But you gave me and idea. What if Longfellow goes back to where you assigned him. When he arrives at his destination he either takes the suit off or it just appears next to his arrival point.

So, I went to the entrance of Sanctuary, just inside where the first house is, and BOOM!!!! My power armour is in the middle of the street like a beautiful pink beacon of Pre-Apocolypse American goodness!

Thank you for the follow-up. 5 years later and this is still an issue, but solvable.

There's a reason I never have my Follower in Power Armor.

They will either ruin it or quickly somehow lose it. They do far better without it.

The only exception is when I get on and off the Prdywyn.

All this years but noone typed the correct answer here:
the problem is that sidekicks that are not your actual sidekicks behave like settlers.
a settler will jump into PA ,if it is charged with a FC or if he can get a FC himself, when a fight ocures in range of the Player, so it can be processed in "reality" .
the point that makes your PA unfindable is the fact that a settler leaves PA as soon the fight ends, no matter where he is at this point.
gave me some real headache when i send Preston, Cait and Reporter girl in PA to jamaica plains (done so because i planned to get V88 and make a PA museum there in survival) . when i arived there myself a settlement attack was running. at the end i needed to comp every sidestreet there to get my PAs back again. because all 3 jumped out of the PAs at fights end wherever they where in JP at that moment.

Followers i find very easy to control. It's an Art learnt from Far-cry 5 and the like, many games  but that's another Story.
For mule spamming a follower to over-carry is best done with Ada and Nick on account of the very short dialogue reply's they produce after each "take that" "get that" request. Draw your weapon and close-up crouch to your loot container, those two followers do it well.

Anyways since this subject OP mentions seems to pop up every so often i decided to stalk the issue over a couple of months by now as you do, many cats died during this curiosity.

These moments should/maybe shed some light what's going on.
And i know it's a necro, I usually ignore em but this is a subject I've been tinkering with, Tom style.

So I took the moment finally to construct the evidence I've gathered.
A quick note of the situational change(where i left PA) and a screenshot was all it needed.
The drained Core was always left in PA. I've left empty/drained(1/2/4) cores laying out and they are never touched, even being close to or in workbench/container/floor.
