you can 'remove duds" by finding completed sets of brackets in the random text and clicking them, they will highlight like a word.

^ This, can often remove half if not most of the words without costing any "Tries." If you have high intelligence you can often remove more than enough sometimes leaving only 1 option available to select making hacking so gosh darn easy that it's easier than lock picking. lol

intelligence was require in the old game, IQ to low + higher security terminals = lead to more wrong words that dont add up in puzzle

Tbh the higher level terminals are easier than the lower level ones because there's a higher chance of matching letters.

No; if the first word you tried had 2 letters correct, and 3 not correct, then, for the next try, it would be 1 out of [however many remaining words contain 2 letters in common with the first word (assuming the words have 5 letters)]. So it could be, perhaps, 1 out of 6. For the second try, select one of those six. The third try would be 1 out of [an even lower number]. Hopefully, buy the time you have only one try left it will reset and you have the original number of tries left.

For all Fallout games with the hacking puzzle, it's basically done the same way. But F4 is easier, because you can try it again after a few seconds.

And, of course, it's not just pairs of brackets: [....]. It's also pairs of parentheses (...), <...>, etc.

Just because one person likes the minigames, doesn't mean everyone will. I'm sure there are certain aspects of the game that the people in this thread are bashing others for because they like the minigame is easy that don't enjoy something that others do, I bet you'd not appreciate being called stupid for it though.

Anyway, someone asked for the console command to bypass hacks/locks.

DO NOT USE CONSOLE COMMANDS WILLY NILLY. Some doors/locks aren't meant to be opened until something specific happens first, like finding a key or completing a quest.

Hit the ` button, it's called "tilde", then click on a door or chest, then type in
unlock
.

Also there are several mods floating around which removes the minigames and instead replaces hack and pick attempts with straight skill checks. They come in many flavors etc.

'FOUR would provide result of 0' means that password does not have any of these letters so avoid words that contain them, e.g.

FROG,
OURS,
ROLL,
FIVE

Even if you hit 'FOUR would provide result of 1' shows that words with all those letters are not the password, since only one of them was correct.

Wrong. If you try "FOUR" and find out that one letter is correct then any word which shares one letter with "FOUR" could be the answer; you can elimate every word which shares zero letters (e.g. "CARS") as well as every word which shares two or more letters (e.g. "FORK")

FROG, ROLL, FIVE share one letter each with FIVE so any one of them could be the solution. OURS can't be the solution since it doesn't share any letters with FIVE, and I don't understand why you'd include it in the list at all.

this is last time i say it. Low IQ and you cant use logic in puzzle, you will get more random words that dont compute with others. ( this was done in F3 and FNV, dont think it has change in F4 )
several guide say you dont need int. gl with that.

In cases like this try to lookup a word with completely different letters, or a word containing only one letter from failed set, to either confirm it is in password or exclude it completely (and all words containing this letter).

Once you get it, it's a "duh" reaction.

The number it gives you represents the number of letters that are exactly where they should be in the correct password.

Let's say the answer is "LIVE".

FOUR would provide result of 0.

LIFT would provide result of 2. The L and the I are correct.

FIVE would provide result of 3. The I, V, and E are correct.

FILE would provide result of 2. The I and the E are correct. While they both have an L, it's in the wrong spot.

Higher intelligence, hacking magazines and Nick's perk all help. It really is pretty easy once you get it, although the expert and master ones have larger words so they can still be a pain. Use the column on the right when you're comparing the words the code gets mind numbing if you stare at it.

This. Hacking isn't hard at all, you just need to use some basic logic. It's a lot like the board game Mastermind, but with letters instead of coloured pegs.

If you find 3 matching letters you're gold, otherwise it's just pure guessing, which I am good at. Never spent more than 30 seconds on an important terminal

Thats what I do with terminals. 90% of the time the terminals only contains some lore messages. Problem if you fail the hack the terminal stays locked... and then you have to cheat it anyway.
