My settlers in Hangman's Alley
I know Hangman's Alley has a bad reputation of having horrible pathing for settlers and settlers not wanting to use half of the settlement but I'm not sure if my problem is normal or not. I'm having a problem where my settlers are leaving my settlement and going into a nearby tunnel to hang out or they just wander the streets outside the settlement boundaries. They spend more time outside my settlement boundaries than they do inside of it now. I teleport them back in to the settlement and they proceed to just leave again. I have them all set to doing jobs but the only one that does it is the one I put on guard duty. The others have stopped doing any work and just spend the day wandering around. The happiness of the settlement is around 60 and they all have jobs, beds, enough food and water, electricity and protection. I'm not sure what could be causing this. I've thought about sending them to other settlements but I don't want them to infect my other settlers. I might have to put them down for the benefit of the Commonwealth.

Best way to is get rid of the settlers. Its just horrible place anyhow to defend and with limited space avail to build, just send them to other settlements or the castle and assign jobs when they get there, they should return to normal behaviour, also turn off the beacon that attracts them. You could then just set it up as a hub for trading.

It's a common problem. For me they congegrate down the stairs on the road by the river or sometimes by the exit to the west. I knocked down the original shacks and the buildings on the north side of the alley and rebuilt them in deco style (similar to the library). My provisioners hang out in a ruined building 2 blocks to the west. Although I have built stores no-one visits them, staff or customers. Yet settlers have no problem navigating 5 levels of stairs with u-turns to get to a glass enclosed farm on the roof. (After I knocked the stairs down twice and rebuilt them exactly as they were before.) What is needed is some sort of in-game navmesh editor.

HA is a good central location e.g. DC is a short sprint to the south. I intended using it to build an area similar to real Boston but as the settlers don't do anything it's not worth it. It's the only settlement I have that doesn't work correctly.

I have been wondering if this behaviour is some sort of "in-joke" by the devs as a comment on the behaviour of real Boston citizens e.g. they spend their time goofing off.

I only open one of the three gates and only have companions there. Currently just Cosgrove. I have all the benchs and it;s my main storage location, but it is just a terrible place to try and use setlers.

Navigation is a bit of a problem in Hangman's Alley. Settlers navigation was fixed by Unofficial Fallout 4 Patch, but place is so narrow that settlers tend to walk around the block to get places.

I do not personally mind. I prefer them from walking around places. However, if they do start ending up having club meetings in places outside the settlement, then their AI and navigation are getting overworked.

I prefer to keep the ground level somewhat clear and rather build my houses above it. The height limit makes it a challenge, so I never have a large amount of settlers there.

Give the clean and simple mod a try, the author of that mod did individual ones for each settlement or if ya want them all in one package

here is the one for Hangmans alley, he did a complete overhaul on that location to make it easier to manage

Thanks for the information. I really like Hangman's Alley due to its centeral location but I don't want to have to deal with a buggy settlement all the time. I'll send all my settlers away and probably just use it as my own storage location or provisioner hub instead.

some ppl complain its bad to defend, well have 4 dualwield assultrons , 2 one side 2 other side, man they hack enemies in to pieces, even i don't want to let them in close range if they are hostile cause they can do serious dam, my lvl 120 even barely bets 1 close range & with plasma thrower what is or at least was OP wep for med range(with him once i made 1 of my bots angry at me to test their power), but NPC are not as smart as to come stealthy & snipe & then run & hide to hit later, in fallout they will never be as good as player so this robots pretty much make ur settlement defense OP

Good location when your playing survival. I learned not to include settlers or keep the number of them limited to 5 or below.

I now just use it for storage and crafting. For role playing reasons I keep 2 settlers as caretakers backed up with turrets.

I also find it one of the easiest settlements to defend. There is a very limited number of places enemies can spawn. Very easy to plan for and set up defenses IMHO.
