Best place to farm legendaries early game?
I'm starting a pipe only playthrough, and pretty much need a good legendary pipe weapon early game. Can anyone give me a good place to farm for this item, and how to do it?

Play on survival mode for a while and hope you find one with a pipe

Firstly wait until level 6+ as you will not get any legendaries below that level ever.

Once at that level, the nearest places in the beginning area to farm legendaries are the Super Duper Mart (plus the garage nearby), USAF Satellite Station Olivia and the Concord Civic Access.

The best way to farm legendaries is use interior cells, but quicksave BEFORE you enter them, you can keep reloading the quicksave to try the enemys again and see what they drop.

the army training building for example is a great place to do this, cause it has so many ghouls in it

If you're going to game the system and farm the same spot over and over to get a specific item, why don't you just install a mod or use console commands? That would save you a lot of time.

console commands are a slippery slope, and I'm playing for achievements right now, and I want to do this legit

That doesn't matter unless you are at the plugin limit, and then you can just merge it with some other mod.

Adding one effect to one item isn't going to cause any instability lol. You can generally ♥♥♥♥ around with console commands as much as you want as long as you don't touch any quest stages or mess with important characters.

Exploiting spawn locations to farm items is 'legit'? Do you think the developers intended for players to repeat the same location over and over again in the hopes of getting that one item? It defeats the entire purpose of the legendary system.
(Note: i don't think developer intent matters at all, especially in Bethesda games, but this notion of being 'legit' while blatantly abusing the system like this is just confusing me. Grinding isn't fun, so why don't you just skip that step, get the thing you want and have fun with the game? Nobody is going to judge you for it.)

Yeah man I get that, but I guess farming is more legit than console commands, and my playthrough is ♥♥♥♥♥♥ if I don't get a legendary pipe weapon soon.

Pipe pistols mostly drop from raiders. Clean out places with named raiders, respawn is higher lvl raiders and legendaries.

Super Duper Mart. Save and reload until you get a goody (Cheating)

If you want to spam farm a fair way, you need a good loop of random events. Around Sanctuary and Tenpines Bluff, you have several random event locations you can run around. Start at the edge of the lake as far north as you can go, the dry creekbed heading into the water has a spawn, move up towards the Ranger Cabin, betwen the Cabin and the water surrounding sanctuary is Another. Head out of Sanctuary towards the Quarry/Olevia and head south towards the unmarked junkyard, go past Tenpines bluff into the valley with the train tracks, and follow them North to the ruined house.

Repeat as necessary. Highly recommended you consider getting Local Leader, building the best Armor Shop, and then getting 10+ Settlers in that settlement, as you will have a good chance of finding The Scribe while running this route.

Unless you get really lucky with random roaming mobs, interior and exterior scripted legendary enemies can be farmed (and not by the afore mentioned method, which has more instructions to go along with it, if you're interested). The downside to this, is that they take several weeks in-game to respawn. Interior legendary enemies respawn in about 30 in-game days, while exterior legendary enemies take about twice that (45-60 in-game days).

As for easy legendary enemies right out of the gate, I would suggest Concord. Find the municiple maintainance tunnels (one entrance is in an alley while the other is behind a bus stop, next to a Pulowski shelter). Inside you will encounter a "Legendary" radroach. At lower levels he can drop the OP'd "Exploding" shogun. Keep in mind that what weapons/armor they drop is determined by YOUR level. There are lists online that can tell you at what levels certain weapons/armor will start to spawn.

Also note, that if you want to increase your chances of finding legendary enemies, you can change your difficulty level. The higher you go, the greater the random chance will be.

Luck. Max it.

Lemmie tell you a tale of Luck: One day I was walking by the Charlston when I heard a battle. Sounded like the clusterphuk by the southeast of diamond city. Seconds later a Legendary Raider dropped out of the sky, dead, and landed at my feet.

Luck.

I start with a M91, just after start of the game, stuff the legendaries.
