Are automatic weapons actually useless?
Is it just my feeling or truth. Im not talking about heavy weapons here which are strong and useful. Like Laser Gatling which is one of the best weapons in game with cheapest ammo. Im talking about normal weapons with automatic upgrade. They have no dmg, they knock. You shoot like 5 bullets and you aim into air. Its not fair trade for that dmg decrease. Plus ammo is rare. You cant afford to waste it with low dmg weapon. I feel like sniper rifle is the best. With shoots two projectiles instead of one enchantement. I got laser sniper that deals 160 dmg I think. And combat riffle on midrange that deals 131. There are just way too good in comparison. I love automatic weapons in mass effect etc. But in this game it seems they are up.

Yep, i find auto weapons quite useless too

low bullet damage compared to semi auto, and each bullet is mitigated more by enemy armor (for rifle, it is even worst because of rifle perk)
high ammos consumption
need to carry more ammos on you (weight in survival) and eventually buy ammos
any situation where they could have a use, jet is all you need

They are usable and do fine, but in the end the semi auto seems to be better in almost all situations, especially for rifles
With some legendary effects, they can do great, but legendary effects are not restricted to autos anyway
Why use 100 ammos to take a place when 10 are all you need...

Still, i like autos for settlers...

Alot of automatic weapons barely have any recoil with the right Modifications.

For Example the Chinese Assault rifle in fully modified RPK Automatic configuration has almost no recoil at all. Even for firing a 7.62mm round.

I haven't tried the Assault Rifle in full auto configuration, but I will say that while the sniper configuration is slightly weaker than the equivalent Combat Rifle and Hunting Rifle sniper versions, the kickback is virtually non existent. You can pretty much stay lined up and take a second shot if the target survives or you miss. That 50. cal hunting rifle, you miss, you can play a round of solitaire while you wait for the scope to get back on target.

Edit: Mind you I personally haven't found the 5.56 mm stashes sufficient to support an Assault Rifle in full auto, but with Scrounger it might be viable.

Suppressors and Recoil Compensating Stocks

Those two things are necessary to bring kickback to an acceptable level. Certain barrel configurations can improve recoil as well.

I haven't found those really all that effective in that sense although the combat rifle isn't too bad. I actually haul two semi-auto Assault Rifles at the moment and a laser Musket for the occasional behemoth level McNasty.

Edit: And Deliverer of course.

I am mostly using single shot weapons, but I think automatic weapons shouldn't be overlooked from their seemingly low damage.

  • Standard Automatic Weapons
These are extremely useful against beasts like Deathclaw and Behemot. Aim for the belly and drop that thing. You will get it down much faster than with single shot weapons.

  • Automatic Armor Piercing Weapons
If you can get mid range toward enemy in power armor, then these things will pierce through the armor and drop the enemy quite fast. Single shot weapons are better from far range, but that allows the other guy to spray the area with minigun, mininukes or some other heavy weapon.

  • Automatic Lasers
This is where laser weapons actually shine. Improved sniper barrel does a lot of damage, but it is slow and requires constant reloading in close range combat. Automatic lasers can drop that advancing Assaultron long before it reaches you with it's blades.

It is a trade-off. Automatic weapons require that you are close enough to actually control them and do the damage. This is why most people (including myself) favor singe shot weapon and longer reach. However, you can't always prevent raiders, synths, ghouls and robots from swarming you. Automatic weapons are very useful in such situation, especially in Survival mode.

My own plan is to advance in Commando, just to turn my laser rifle to automatic weapon. I already have Laser Musket as my slow weapon, so I don't really need another slow energy weapon to my inventory. I am carrying it, because laser musket is too slow to deal with enemies that got too close.

The only full auto weapon I carry is a .38 pipe pistol with kneecapper. I don't need it all that often but against anything big and fast it's a fine weapon. Then finish it off with whatever's appropriate and merciful.

-Decembers Child

-Chinese Assault Rifle

-Spray and Pray

Those are the three best Ballistic Automatic weapons that I use. And all three have virtually no Recoil after upgrading.

Shotguns are for close combat and they are insane. +all rifles pierce armor inc shotguns

I did pretty much the same, though I had it fitted out as a rifle, rather than a pistol.

Other than that, the only automatics I've used much are glitch weapons.
garravesh Feb 9, 2018 @ 4:22am
auto weapons use a lot of ammo. In some situations ammo is scarce depending on playstyle and if you have weight limits.

One shot rifles and close ranged weapons like the shotgun are for more weffective when burdened with survival mode in this game.

If you are playing a game with little limits they can be ok weapons.

Combat shotgun is my go to weapon. However, they are not as effective against all enemies.

My current loadout in Survival mode:
  • .50 Cal Sniper rifle
  • 6 Crank Laser Musket (long scope)
  • .45 Combat Rifle (will be converted to .308 soon)
  • Laser Rifle (will be converted to Automatic soon)
  • Combat Shotgun (Reflex sight)

Only thing that is actually missing is the short range laser weapon. I already have Laser Musket, so I do not actually need the Laser Rifle as another slow weapon.

Other option of course is to turn that in to Laser Shotgun, but I do not really like that idea. It is worth trying though, because I do not have any Commando Perks yet with this character.

Before level 40 or so, don't even worry about it. However, be hoarding all the 5.56 you find. It doesn't weigh you down, and just keep on stacking it. There will come a time when you're going to find a Legendary Assault that, once upgraded, will be amazing. There are so many of them out there, that choosing a favorite is not always easy. I personally like the one that staggers your opponent. It works great when they can't even shoot back or run toward you or anything.

First thing I do when I get into town, is visit the vendors and buy out all their 5.56 before I start selling all the crap I don't want. Over level 70, it's the difference between getting beat on pretty darned bad, and putting the thing down before it gets to you. Some of those nasty things in Far Harbor can do a lot of damage not to mention the horrors in the Glowing Sea.

Early on in the game, though, stick with anything that hits hard, reloads fast, and don't forget that crouching (hiding) will steady your aim as well as making it very hard for them to hit you.
