For Example the Chinese Assault rifle in fully modified RPK Automatic configuration has almost no recoil at all. Even for firing a 7.62mm round.
Edit: Mind you I personally haven't found the 5.56 mm stashes sufficient to support an Assault Rifle in full auto, but with Scrounger it might be viable.
Those two things are necessary to bring kickback to an acceptable level. Certain barrel configurations can improve recoil as well.
Edit: And Deliverer of course.
These are extremely useful against beasts like Deathclaw and Behemot. Aim for the belly and drop that thing. You will get it down much faster than with single shot weapons.
If you can get mid range toward enemy in power armor, then these things will pierce through the armor and drop the enemy quite fast. Single shot weapons are better from far range, but that allows the other guy to spray the area with minigun, mininukes or some other heavy weapon.
This is where laser weapons actually shine. Improved sniper barrel does a lot of damage, but it is slow and requires constant reloading in close range combat. Automatic lasers can drop that advancing Assaultron long before it reaches you with it's blades.
It is a trade-off. Automatic weapons require that you are close enough to actually control them and do the damage. This is why most people (including myself) favor singe shot weapon and longer reach. However, you can't always prevent raiders, synths, ghouls and robots from swarming you. Automatic weapons are very useful in such situation, especially in Survival mode.
My own plan is to advance in Commando, just to turn my laser rifle to automatic weapon. I already have Laser Musket as my slow weapon, so I don't really need another slow energy weapon to my inventory. I am carrying it, because laser musket is too slow to deal with enemies that got too close.
The only full auto weapon I carry is a .38 pipe pistol with kneecapper. I don't need it all that often but against anything big and fast it's a fine weapon. Then finish it off with whatever's appropriate and merciful.
-Chinese Assault Rifle
-Spray and Pray
Those are the three best Ballistic Automatic weapons that I use. And all three have virtually no Recoil after upgrading.
Yeas thats my midrange rifle. XD
Shotguns are for close combat and they are insane. +all rifles pierce armor inc shotguns
Other than that, the only automatics I've used much are glitch weapons.
One shot rifles and close ranged weapons like the shotgun are for more weffective when burdened with survival mode in this game.
If you are playing a game with little limits they can be ok weapons.
Combat shotgun is my go to weapon. However, they are not as effective against all enemies.
My current loadout in Survival mode:
Only thing that is actually missing is the short range laser weapon. I already have Laser Musket, so I do not actually need the Laser Rifle as another slow weapon.
Other option of course is to turn that in to Laser Shotgun, but I do not really like that idea. It is worth trying though, because I do not have any Commando Perks yet with this character.
First thing I do when I get into town, is visit the vendors and buy out all their 5.56 before I start selling all the crap I don't want. Over level 70, it's the difference between getting beat on pretty darned bad, and putting the thing down before it gets to you. Some of those nasty things in Far Harbor can do a lot of damage not to mention the horrors in the Glowing Sea.
Early on in the game, though, stick with anything that hits hard, reloads fast, and don't forget that crouching (hiding) will steady your aim as well as making it very hard for them to hit you.
