Simply said skip the part of commonwealth Settlements but still get the Perks you like and can afterwards still do missions ect for them..

Complete the raiders quests to get the 2 perks first.
(I recommend Operators and The Pack unless you are 100% melee focused)
You get to keep the perks even after you wipe them out.

I suggest to at least explore the northern town before you enter kiddy kingdom, because there is a chance for another finalboss dialoge (not sure just found out but couldnt proof it) Dont want to spoil anything
Try to do all the missions first, those are pretty enjoyable, then choose the raider gang you like the most, and then betray them all, not saying that you have to be evil, but it will make you enjoy at least all the dlc with all the missions.

A couple, just send all the settlers to another settlement, then send them back when the quest is over.

Send Preston somewhere out of the way and don't visit him until after all the gangs are dead.

yep i just did this, well you can do some of kiddy kingdom, as you get the hint to go exlore the northern town from there, or at least I did. Just avoid actually going into the castle, till you have been to the northern town :)

Also what I never got is when they tell you to go raid, why there is no option for you to tell them, they are all your settlements anyway, so infact they are already under control, your control. I never understood the whole, you are attacking your own settlements....I mean why would you, they are already yours....Its like paying off your morgage, then going and getting another one, to rebuy the house you already have, simply as some friends of yours were not with you at the time you bought it the first time round.....

If you wipe those raiders out too early, you will miss out on the perks they give you. I took the raider side, wipe out all commonwealth colonies.

That is my point, at least on survival, you need to take them to be able to explore/rest/eat/drink etc. So when they tell you to raid them, you should be like, erm, that is already mine...

It would have made more sense for you to attack and take over previously unknown settlements, like attacking some of the gunners outposts etc.

But then you couldn't be a bad evil raider! JTDFC.

I hate raiders. They are so god awful at being evil.
