Experiencing input lag. How do I fix ?
Hey everyone

I've been meaning to dive into this game as soon as I'd upgrade my rig so I could run it at maxed graphics and you know ... enjoy the **** out of it. Lo and behold, input lag and forced vsync that breaks the game if forced off. I guess I went from not powerful enough pc to too powerful for my own good.

Monitor is 1080p 60hz btw.

I've tried forcing triple buffering, but while it made a small difference (I think), it still isn't up to playable levels for me. Forcing vsync off fixes the input lag of course, but completely breaks the game (speeds up physics and everything). Apparently Skyrim does this too ... well ... another pile of fun to be had later (I was planning on playing it with the new rig too).

I happened upon a great fix : forcing vsync off then limiting fps to 60 with rivatuner. Unfortunately, this causes a noticeable tear in the display, which doesn't move. It makes sense. 59 or 61 fps make the tear move down and up respectively. More fps makes the tearing barely noticeable but messes with the game, I tested at 72 fps and the game was sped up by 10% (tested with my character's run speed).

What options are left ? I will one of these days upgrade to a 1080p 144hz gsync monitor which I believe will fix the tearing problem, but in the meantime, is there any way to make the game playable ?

Right now it's a choice between a gimped sped up game, screen tearing, or noticeable input lag which ruins my fps experience.

Thanks for reading. At least the rig is awesome !

Edit : found a solution finally ! For anyone with the same problem : use riva tuner statistics server to cap your fps WITH vsync active behind. I personally disabled the game's vsync and use the nvidia control panel vsync but it probably makes no difference. It works with any cap, like 60, but apparently you're better off capping a bit below your monitor's actual refresh rate (I use 59.987) - follow the guide here https://www.blurbusters.com/howto-low-lag-vsync-on/ or here https://forums.guru3d.com/threads/the-truth-about-pre-rendering-0.365860/page-12#post-5380262

Use your GPU's driver software (AMD's adrenalin or Nvidia's control panel) to enable v-sync.

Yeah that unfortunately does not make the game playable for me. Unless you're not supposed to turn off in-game vsync with the Fallout4Prefs.ini thing. I think it does reduce input lag, but compared to 0 input lag (without vsync), the difference is still too huge and makes me feel like a snail. Or like controlling a snail from a distance with input lag. Upside down. With my feet. No, okay, I'll stay real.

Any way to simply eliminate input lag ?

Here is a guide if you haven't tried it already.

Yeah that's when I get the static screen tear. It fixes input lag but the image becomes broken in two.

Are you running a SLI setup? A dual GPU setup can cause screen tearing with some games.

Are you using a controller? Try disable the controller in one of the game menu

Btw what is your pc specs if it is so powerful you would not mind sharing it here?

I do cap my FPS to 60 with ENBoost, it has a vsync function that feels very responsive too, at least feels very responsible for me but I play at 144hz.

Ya lets see the specs of your rig.
Disable vsync (as it's 60Hz eurgh)
Then download and install RivaTuner Statistics Server: http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/rtss-rivatuner-statistics-server-download.html and cap the game to run at say 50fps
Then the magic MOD - install No Borders (to get a solid high fps)

No controller, no SLI.

Specs :

I5 8400
Inno3D GTX 1070 TWIN x2 v3
2x8GB 2400
H310M DS2
Seasonic M12II-520 EVO

It may not be powerful compared to a dual 1080ti + 8700k setup, but to me who comes from not even being able to run F4 at 20 fps at lowest settings in the city (where it's crowded), it's amazing ! It runs at 90+ in ultra settings in the same location now !

I'm not sure if capping the fps with ENBoost is different than doing it with Rivatuner but I'll try ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I guess I'll try 50 too. How will that mod help me though ? It's got nothing to do with vsync or fps as far as I can see.

Thanks for the help by the way :)

Try overriding Pre-Rendered frames in the Nvidia Control panel to 1.

Also, 1080p 60hz isn't enough to let us know if the Monitor is the issue. Depending on your panel tech, your monitor might have a delay.

TN Panels are the fastest, and are usually <2ms (miliseconds)

MVA Panels are good, usually between 2ms and 5ms

IPS Panels range from decent to abysmal with 5ms to 15ms. Any panel delay over 10ms should be considedered worthless for gamers. Anything over 5ms should be considered poor for competitive gaming (But decent for anything else)

Monitor is G246HL.

If my monitor had a delay though, I'm sure disabling vsync wouldn't make the game instantly feel good, as good as any other uncapped game with so little input lag you don't feel it (like Overwatch).

Update :
So I tried to lock to 50 fps and it's definitely better in the sense that there's still no input lag and no big tear, but there are a lot of tiny tears all around the display. They're hard to really notice but you constantly have a feeling of a twitch in the corner of your eye.
ENBoost's forced vsync is like Nvidia's vsync, input lag is still there but lessened compared to iPresentInterval=1
ENBoost's fps lock feature is exactly like Rivatuner, no noticeable input lag but a big static screen tear.

I'll be honest it's definitely playable, especially if I just get used to it. It's just not as enjoyable as unlimited free instant movement of the camera like you actually own your character instead of being in a bubble looking outwards through his eyes and controlling him with a delay. Every other fps game has conformed me to minimal input lag, and this just feels wrong.

I play on laptop with nvidia g-sync. Changed V-sync to Adaptive in Nvidia driver. It fixed the issue for me. So poor that Bethesda did not provide an option for selecting V-sync modes.

when the game was created those modes did not exist or were still an in development deal that few if any had available.

In fact in one of the final official patches for fallout 4 they added the now broken for newer cards weapons debris system using the sdk provided by NVIDIA who then abandoned that version for a newer version not backwards compatible with the older sdk provided by NVIDIA and used by bethesda to add the system to the game.
