go find a map with colored contours, the different colors will tell you where is more dangerous.

If you start seeing enemies with skulls in the health bar, run toward them guns blazing.

Enemies tend to get higher level the further south & east you go, but like other Bethesda games the enemies scale with you mostly.

Basically the Lands North of Boston are designed for Low to Medium players. Boston itself is about Medium to High, With the Southern Levels designed for Higher players.

Doesnt matter. When I play fallout, I run the wasteland the second that I step foot on it.

what difficulty are you playing on?

you go to concord, get the full suit of T-45 from the minutemen mission.

I didn't wear it, but It probably would have kept me safe for most places.

only thing that really killed me on normal difficulty was the assaultron dominatrix in quincy fast travel spawn point. (not being in power armor)

You head down to Red rocket and Abernathy farm, get some Tatos from abernathy farm to grow. Make your way south to Cambridge police station for the BOS radiant quests. which are 250 XP each and keep repeating forever, danse's quest should get you enough cores to keep your suit going.

The T-51 is repairable with steel. the T-60 and X-01 need aluminum.

but yeah I just used regular armor for most of the game. but if you wear power armor you should be survivable most anywhere. if you don't mind repairing the stuff semi constantly.

^this. It is extremely helpfull to know where the enemies are stronger and where their "rubber-banding" lets them wander. Sticking to roads can also help a little bit.

But, if you want some cheap easy levels, you can level up pretty quickly just by rescuing the group from the Concord museum and returning to Sandtuary Hills to complete the small settlement building turtorial. Along those lines, go into build mode and scrap EVERYTHING in Sanctuary Hills. Then do the same at the nearby Red Rocket. After you're done at the RR look behind it and head towards the water tower. Keep going past that until you see the power lines tower with a building built into it. That is Abernathy Farms. Talk to them and get their quest to recover the lost amulet. You don't have to do it right away, and if you're not familiar with the area or how to handle larger groups, just avoid the area (for now). So this set-up will give you three settlements (two if you don't venture into the A.F. quest). Then, pick a settlement (i'd start with S.H. since you already started there with the tutorial) and just build. It doesn't matter what. Maybe play the settlement system and get S.H. set up to receive more settlers and build sheltered beds, crops and defenses. Building this early on will net you a lot of xp without having to go into combat or do any of the entry level quests. Pay attention to your perk page and put points into things that let you build more things, like advanced turrets, better generators and water pumps. I forgot what the requirements are for a large water pump, but as soon as you can, build some of those in the river between S.H. and R.R. The water pumps will start you on your way to becoming a water baron. Easy caps! Just remember that your workshop workbench can only hold so many resources, so build some extra storage containers and empty your workshop of any bottled water that is there and any crops that show up. The settlers will consume any food and water that they or the pumps will produce, that they need, and will put the "extras" in the workshop.

If you find yourself running out of materials to build with, keep in mind that some objects in the world can be picked up, and brought to a settlement, and then scrapped in build mode. Good examples of this are the tires that are littered along the road between S.H. and R.R. You won't be able to selec them and place them in your inventory, but, if you hold down the button that lets you select them, you will notice that they will be "picked up" and hover in front of you. Then all you have to do is keep the button pressed down and "walk" to a settlement. There is also an engine block under the bridge that can be scrapped.

There are also some more "cheaty" ways to level up without doing anything. Or, a method that I was doing before they "fixed" the glitch, was to dupe items. I hated restarting, so I would dupe a few things in game (this was on xbone, mind you). Now, since the game was patched of non-game breaking features, you can do similar things using the command console. One of those things is to spawn in 42 "I'm SPECIAL" books. That will get your SPECIAL stats to 10 without using the other console commands that if done improperly or using the wrong one will break certain things. The other thing you can do to help level up without feeling too cheaty, is to console command in a starter supply of materials. 10k of wood, steel and a couple others (just forgot what I normally need right at the start), is a good start, for the building to get xp method. This is only if you don't want to wander around and scavenge forever. If you do, certain area will respawn junk for you to collect again.

Oh, and if you go the building mode to level up method, don't forget that there is a celllar behind one of the houses in S.H. that has some good supplies at the start.

And then there are mods. . . .with those, you can cheat to your hearts content for leveling or whatever.

As far as quests. If you rescue Gravy and group he will eventually give you the start of many radiant quests to help settlements. The first one is usually to help Tenpines Bluffs. That requires going to and clearling out the Corvega plant. Not really recommended right off the bat, as it is a tough fight early on. A good small quest at the beginning would be to head south of Concord and follow the road to a small diner. that will give you a feel of the games' setting. And, while your there, go around back and look for Starlight drive-in (can't miss it). Another free settlement. By the time you're around level 10 or so, you should be able to at least try the Corvega plant and maybe find and return the amulet to A.F. Look for big structures, and locations on your compass to find locations. Finding those will give a small amount of xp. Another good starter quest is to clear out the rock quarry. And not far from there, you will find the Olivia Satelite Array and a small junkyard that has a FatMan and a sentry bot that you can program to harass three different locations.

Just follow the road south from sanctuary. Once you get to concord , try to find the church and follow the road in front of it toward the south west. If you find a fork , try to keep following the road south. You should find a diner and get a radio transmission further south. Follow the quest you get from the radio after checking the diner. Once you've done that. Keep goin south until you find a bridge. You should start seeing friendly guards after that. Find the city they are guarding or back track and explore everything between there and sanctuary ;).

Plus you can snipe him from the highway. Or, if you're feeling froddy, you can kite him towards a bus that you can safely hit him from.

And OP if you do find yourself being chased by a behemoth or even a deathclaw, find a ruined building or bus.
