The Fat Man and its name is based off of Fat Man and Little Boy that hit Japan in World War 2, the launching device itself is based off of that yes.

Meant to include that you'd never actually want to carry one as they weigh too much for a single person to carry around and Fallout's version is unrealistic in that sense.

Yes, it was real. And no, it was never used. There were aboiut 1200 made. But, none of them ever saw wartime use. I, for one, would not want to be on that crew that had to use one. It fired a 1 Megaton projectile up to a range of about 2 miles. And, the initial explosion was calculated to around 1.5 miles. So, do the math. No matter how far you shoot it, you're going to hit yourself. It wasn't really put into active duty and all of them were decomissioned and disassembled in the ealry 70's-80's?. You might be able to find one intact at a military museum though. It was one of those weapons that the general public didn't need to know about. It was kind of a farce of an invention to begin with. It was only made to fullfill the need of a "hope to never use it, but, if we do, it will only take one" type of intimidation factor. The thought process was similar to the A and H-bombs. They did work though. They were thoroughly tested south of Gloom Lake (Area 6?, South of Area 51) before they were put into service. They were more of a novety item for the military. U.S. military invetions of that time are quite interesting to look into. Very wierd stuff.
