Edit: minigun is great if you manage to find one with an explosive legendary effect.
"Is the mini gun good"?
No. The spin up takes it out of many fights. Mobs can kite to safety before you ever see bullets.
damage boosts for any fast weapon that adds extra damage. wounding, explosive, cyro, plasma infused. Or benefits like knee capper, knockback, and similar stuff.
With the minigun, like all low damage fast automatic weapons, the right legendary effect really makes the gun much more functional.
I wouldn't carry a minigun if someone gave me the gun and 2,000 rounds of ammo free. It's virtually useless.
Acquiring an Explosive Minigun though is like winning the post apocalyptic lottery. As a Heavy weapon the explosive damage benefits from both Heavy Gunner and Demolitions Expert, similar to how the Missile Launcher and Fat Man work. Just... don't use it in tight quarters, for obvious reasons.
I like giving it to my settlers, it's better than a pipe rifle and after a certain point I got a ton of them
They also make good ones to scrap for parts. but then again I loot and scrap all armor and weapons till around level 30-40ish then I just look for the modded stuff
however if you get explosive variant of both they basicly turn into the best weapons in the whole game. its like a different game almost. the shotgun with explosive is outright broken untility wise.
the only other weapon that comes even close to these 2 then is the splattercannon/slover but that can be only be gotten in nuka world dlc.
just dont try to use the explosive minigun in small indoor locations. youll regret that fast....
the shotgun on the other hand has basicly no downsides if you know to not pull the trigger when something is right in your face and instead aim at the floor behind it to get rid of it.
the basic variants are pretty meh tough. there is better base weapons for sure. but with the right legendary they turn so much top of the class they break the game.
If you give it to a settler then its fantastic, if you use it your self its not worth it.
