Abandoning the Reunions quest

In order to get Nick as a companion, you have to go as far as agreeing to use Dogmeat. After that, I want to delay the main quest and just travel with Nick. I do not want the Brotherhood arrival yet. Can you get Nick but not actually call Dogmeat? I guess I could make Dogmeat just sit and wait at Kellogs door for the next month or so, but I will not do that. The next best place to abandon the main quest looks like when we arrive at Fort Hagen (Kellogs home). Once there, Dogmeat will return home. Can I just not go into the base right now or will that break something? Can I go with Nick to Far Harbor without killing Kellog?

If you break into Kellogg's place, Dogmeat will be waiting for you outside after you suggest using him. The conversation is (AFAIK) not possible to avoid, though you can skip the next step ("follow Dogmeat") and you don't have to go into Fort Hagen immediately either.

Thats what I thought, but like I said, I can't just leave Dogmeat sitting there for month(s). Not from a role-playing viewpoint. (Futurama anyone? )

You can meet Dogmeat there, then just leave. Dogmeat will return to his current home at that point.

It's the best I can do.

Why don't you follow Dogmeat to Fort Hagen and stop progressing the quest at that point? The Dogmeat can be sent to a settlement.

Ah, I didn't realize you refer to Kellog's home as Fort Hagen. I assumed you meant his home in Diamond City.

Oops. You are right. Sorry. I was being lazy and trying to type less but I did change the meaning. Hey! I know what is in my head when I say stuff. Why do everyone else gotta go by what I actually said instead of what I meant?
