unable to advance 'shadow of steel'
Hi all

Hoping someone can clear up a bit of confusuon for me regarding the 'shadow of steel' quest. I have listened to the radio and the quest is at 'return to paladin dance' but whenever I do he just asks me to join them (which I dont want to do) and no other dialogue options. My questions is, is the quest one you can only do if you join them, or is it important to the plot? If it's the former I can just ignore it (despite hating having my quest log clogged up with unwanted quests - wheres the abaondon option??) but if its an important quest, how can I get the proper sequence to trigger?

Thanks in advance

You have to join the Brotherhood as this quest is all about getting to meet Maxson
Obviously, a non member wont be allowed to board the Prydwen

Note that you can join all factions
Even RP wise, it makes sense to 'join' them all, if only to get an educated guess about what their view and ideology is from the inside
Later on, you will have to decide which ones you really side with

If you haven't progressed through the main plot (Past a certain point) Joining the Brotherhood of steel will consist of Getting quests from Knight Rhys and Scribe Halen. You will get nothing from them (That suit of power Armor and rank and stuff) until passing that main plot point which brings the BOS to the Commonwealth in force. Once it arrives you will recieve a summons back to Cambridge Police Station to Report to the Main BOS base and start that in earnest.

If you do not wish to join the BOS than simply do not say yes to Danse. Depending on future faction choices you may be at odds with the BOS in the future.

Following in polite circles is called ranting. You may want to stop reading here.

No matter what you do, you will not avoid having them drop Power armor idiots around you to steal your kills, knock srap and matierals all willy nilly, annoy you with their vertibird engines and when destroyed (by others or yourself) aim the wreckage at you (WITHOUT FAIL, SERIOUSLY. If a vertibird goes down, it's coming at you).

Ok, so once I go past a certain plot point I can speak to him about shadows of steel? Im currently about to go look for someone called virgil in the glowing sea, should it have triggered aleady or do I have a way to go? Im just trying to figure out if quest is bugged or its as it should be :)
Thanks for the recommendation, are you saying it is a bug and that patch will fix it? A little more detail would be appreciated, cheers ;)

The point the first response was hinting at was when you exited Fort Hagen, which you are already past.

No, I don't think you do. I believe it is possible to complete the main quest without ever joining the BoS or meeting Maxson.
Shadow of Steel isnt the main quest
