Crash on saving
Alright, I am so tired of this.

I cannot save. Whenever I try to save, game suddenly crashes in a blink of an eye without any error or explanation. Here is the things you should know (gonna be a long list):
  • Right after my "save" is broken, whenever I try to save (no matter it's quicksave or regular save), game crashes. Cannot proceed on game.
  • It just happens. Even when I play with my current mod and have proceeded with the SAME SETUP FOR OVER 48 HOURS. There is no way to foresee this nonsense, it just screws my save for no reason.
  • There is a save which is the latest one that works and saving doesn't work right after that save.
  • It sometimes crashes in game just as it does when I save but everyone knows that it's a Bethesda game :)
  • Nothing pops up after the game closes itself.
  • I cannot access to log files because of its impossibility.
  • I have currently got 122 mods active but I don't think they cause that.
  • It happens no matter when I install a new mod or I don't. It just happens.
  • I use F4SE
  • The game creates two files (.fos/.f4se) after you save. no shet
  • If I cannot save, the game still creates the save file but .fos only, and it has "filename.fos.tmp" format. It doesn't create a .f4se file
  • Healthy saves has more than 20-75 MB size, while damaged .fos.tmp saves has between 1.449kb-1.516kb size.
Edits
  • My first save has 22.324 MB of size and it keeps exceeding on every save. The last save before the broken one has 46 MB of size and it suddenly exceeds to 77 MB on my latest working save.
  • Tried editing a save but it gives "range check error", I suppose devs made a changement on the base game to make this impossible. No save editing.
I googled it and searched EVERYWHERE to find a solution. And this isn't the first time! I have been playing this game for over 2 years and this happened, I dunno, three times, I guess? Since then, no fix from Bethesda, or from community. I REALLY want to know what causes this, even if I cannot find a solution. I just want to know why.

Here are the things I have tried:
  • Tried UAC but it doesn't work on 64 bit applications.
  • Disabled Windows Firewall
  • Disabled "Windows Security"
  • Disabled Steam Cloud Save
  • Moved my older saves to have more space.
  • Deleted .tmp files on my Saves directory
  • Checked dozens of times if my save directory is read-only
  • Found out a some kind of "folder protection" on Windows Security and it was disabled by default, and re-enabled it to try. It didn't work, re-disabled.
  • Waitted for an update from Bethesda, should have known that it was not a good idea.

I only didn't messed up with mods because I don't think that my mods cause all this. Because it doesn't happen after installing a mod or removing one. It just happens while playing. I got nothing on my hands and this♥♥♥♥♥♥really pisses me off. While Bethesda is busy with revising the "Message of the Day" (see update post), I think it's up to us to figure out what's going on. I'd be REALLY appreciated if anyone helps me on this. Thanks :)

My opinions
I suppose mods cause all this but in a different way. In every save, some kind of data of the plugins of your mods just stack over and over on your every save, then it exceeds the "healthy" limit, then that makes that save broken in time, than you cannot proceed anymore. That's why my save keeps getting broken after a while of playing. I guess we need to keep the number of the mods we have as minimum as possible or just to play the game vanilla. I guess this is what happens at the end when you use a buggy engine over and over again, with heavily modifying to♥♥♥♥♥♥ for 21 years.

This is it, I'm done.

At the times I posted this discussion, I had a PC that was potato for this game and after some days, I could get my hands on a new, better machine. I clean-installed the game and then installed the same mods over again and finally started a new game.

Since then, this problem never occured no matter how much I played on the same save (I have exceeded 3 days play-time) and it's been one and a half years since I got my new machine. I have even installed some CC skins. But I still have no idea what actually causes this problem. Now I have 136 mods with 185 plugins. I can only suggest installing engine-extending mods such as Buffout 4 and PrivateProfileRedirector etc.

Bethesda not giving a damn about this save-breaking bug pisses me off so bad...

If only your bug occurred in 2017 before they stopped providing support for it.....

I have over 800 mods, only between 200 and 300 are hardcoded esp and esm, the others are esl
Naruto 607 Jul 8, 2021 @ 1:46pm
I guess I'm not the only one, then. I only use FO4Edit to merge, bash, and patch ESP/ESLs into a simple, convenient, and lowest load order. Never used any mod managers to install mods; manual mod installation is my preference. I managed to note however I can from the crash log that Buffout 4 recorded.

Full log is here[drive.google.com].

In short:

Game crashed when I do autosave, quicksave, and even manual saving. Previously before I edit the Merged Patch ESP that I made from FO4Edit to create merged patches, I don't have any crashing issue; the only issue I have is quite minor, like crashes in The Castle, game crashed because of missing texture after hours of playthrough...

The patch I made is to make any stuffs like weapons, ammo, and many others that come from the mods are shown up altogether and properly. I mostly put my work on it ever since I started to mod Fallout 4 and now I have as many as 313 mods (which includes UFO4P, some of my homemade mods, and the Merged Patch), and this happened right after I modded my Merged Patch to include anything that doesn't get included from other mods. The last thing I did was merging leveled lists of mods.

So, I might gonna think of this based on the crash log: there's a mod called Caliber Complex[www.nexusmods.com] (I shortened it as CCx as there is a CC abbreviation that stands for "Creation Club") that has leveled lists modified to complement with it. The problem is that there are 141 leveled lists for each new caliber types, doubled by another 141 for Scrounger perk, and I doubt that could be the cause. Meanwhile, Weaponsmith Extended and patches to complement it don't have that much to add on the leveled lists; each go on their respective leveled list.

As I looked on the registers and stacks at the time the game crashed, it pointed out my last modified Merged Patch @ FormID 1FE31D, which suprisingly hit the count of 248 (crazy, isn't it? Anyone also have this?). My own unreleased mod that combines WSE and CCx framework has as much as 243 items. And I was wondering; before editing my Merged Patch, I can save, autosave, and quicksave the game just fine, and now it won't. I started a new game just in case and it was stuck in a permanent limbo, with game continuously in a loading screen and won't go away. Could "overloading" the leveled list caused this issue? I can assure that this issue will go away if I reduce the number of items loaded in the leveled list, but I want opinions on this.

And in case you wonder, my savegame isn't bloated. 22 MB FOS file, 10 KB F4SE file, and 96+ hours of playthrough. When trying either autosave, quicksave, and manual save at the time of this issue, it created a temp file as much as 1.5 MB. The lowest when I tried the manual save is ~1.43 MB. Not installing any mods that increase file size such as War of the Commonwealth or Sim Settlements. Level 54 character (perhaps), not yet into "Unlikely Valentine" main quest.

It makes sense. Good one. I am going to pin it to up top to make it easily seen for the people still having this issue. They might want to try it out. Thank you.

Guys, it's the issue has nothing to do with mods. Played with zero mods, only DLCs, faced savegame crash after taking X-01 at Nuka World.

A lot of times it has to do with having the steam library in the program files directory due to windows constant security changes. Many have said following steams instructions to move the installation outside of program files has fixed many issues with games.

https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/4BD4-4528-6B2E-8327

This can also be related to the security settings concerning the documents folder that keep changing many have used the symlink process to have the files stored outside of the documents folder while being linked to from the documents folder.

these instructions were given years ago though I would go a step further and move the entire My Documents/Fallout4 folder just to be sure rather than just the saves.

Why would one move the whole My Documents folder, just to change the FO4 savegame location

1. Copy or move the savegames from My Documents/Fallout4/Saves to the location desired, eg. G:\FO4Saves
2. Delete or rename the original Saves folder at My Documents/Fallout4/Saves to something else, eg. Saves.backup
3. Open cmd with admin rights and navigate to My Documents/Fallout4
4. Create a symlink to the new location with mklink

Basic Syntax:
mklink /D [linkname] [linktarget]

To follow my example:
mklink /D Saves G:\FO4Saves

This will create a directory symlink named "Saves" in the My Documents/Fallout4/ folder, which points to the new savegame location. Windows treats the directory symlink as a folder, and so does Fallout. Works completely flawless for me since 200+ hrs of gameplay.

I made post #54 in this thread about two years ago, and ended that post by saying that I was going to re-mod the game to see if it once again started to almost insta CTD after a certain amount of gameplay hours. Turns out it did, my mod list wasnt even heavy, and after about ~25 hours, CTDs would occur about 30 seconds into loading in, as well as if I tried to save, load, fast travel, die, or do anything. I tried dozens of fixes and suggestions but to no avail, and specifically kept a close eye throughout my playthrough to make sure my savegame files weren't bloated either. Eventually I just gave up entirely.

The only thing I can add to this discussion now is that Im 95% certain that my problem, and the problem many seasoned modders face with this game, has absolutely nothing to do with mods or a mod-list and the cause of the CTDs lies externally, probably something to do with windows and its security, steam cloud saving, or what was said in post #68. Fallout 4 and its engine is practically and technically held together with duct-tape so it save corrupting after a certain amount of time might just be inevitable for the unfortunate few.

I've moved on to other games that don't require as much torture and turmoil to mod as bethesda products, but I just might get the itch to mod f4 again so if I do I'll report back if this ♥♥♥♥ hits the fan again just like its done for me several times before.

I know this is a fairly old topic but I'd like to add something that helped me since I recently encountered this very same problem! If you use NMM (Nexus Mod Manager) hit the Purge Mods button. this'll delete the links in the directory temporally, then deploy your mods again (this'll restore the links) and load into the game through F4SE and things should work as normal! I just did it myself and it worked like a charm! Here's hoping this helps someone else out there!

Yeah i have this problem right now, tried purging and deploying, but nothing seemed to change for better, and it keeps crashing after i try to save. Bethesda makes saving system so bad, that it is like they have dementia over there as developers.
Won't be thrilled to delete these mods, and afterwards reinstalling them, if some of my mods affecting appearances starts to screw up.
