Crash on saving
Alright, I am so tired of this.

I cannot save. Whenever I try to save, game suddenly crashes in a blink of an eye without any error or explanation. Here is the things you should know (gonna be a long list):
  • Right after my "save" is broken, whenever I try to save (no matter it's quicksave or regular save), game crashes. Cannot proceed on game.
  • It just happens. Even when I play with my current mod and have proceeded with the SAME SETUP FOR OVER 48 HOURS. There is no way to foresee this nonsense, it just screws my save for no reason.
  • There is a save which is the latest one that works and saving doesn't work right after that save.
  • It sometimes crashes in game just as it does when I save but everyone knows that it's a Bethesda game :)
  • Nothing pops up after the game closes itself.
  • I cannot access to log files because of its impossibility.
  • I have currently got 122 mods active but I don't think they cause that.
  • It happens no matter when I install a new mod or I don't. It just happens.
  • I use F4SE
  • The game creates two files (.fos/.f4se) after you save. no shet
  • If I cannot save, the game still creates the save file but .fos only, and it has "filename.fos.tmp" format. It doesn't create a .f4se file
  • Healthy saves has more than 20-75 MB size, while damaged .fos.tmp saves has between 1.449kb-1.516kb size.
Edits
  • My first save has 22.324 MB of size and it keeps exceeding on every save. The last save before the broken one has 46 MB of size and it suddenly exceeds to 77 MB on my latest working save.
  • Tried editing a save but it gives "range check error", I suppose devs made a changement on the base game to make this impossible. No save editing.
I googled it and searched EVERYWHERE to find a solution. And this isn't the first time! I have been playing this game for over 2 years and this happened, I dunno, three times, I guess? Since then, no fix from Bethesda, or from community. I REALLY want to know what causes this, even if I cannot find a solution. I just want to know why.

Here are the things I have tried:
  • Tried UAC but it doesn't work on 64 bit applications.
  • Disabled Windows Firewall
  • Disabled "Windows Security"
  • Disabled Steam Cloud Save
  • Moved my older saves to have more space.
  • Deleted .tmp files on my Saves directory
  • Checked dozens of times if my save directory is read-only
  • Found out a some kind of "folder protection" on Windows Security and it was disabled by default, and re-enabled it to try. It didn't work, re-disabled.
  • Waitted for an update from Bethesda, should have known that it was not a good idea.

I only didn't messed up with mods because I don't think that my mods cause all this. Because it doesn't happen after installing a mod or removing one. It just happens while playing. I got nothing on my hands and this♥♥♥♥♥♥really pisses me off. While Bethesda is busy with revising the "Message of the Day" (see update post), I think it's up to us to figure out what's going on. I'd be REALLY appreciated if anyone helps me on this. Thanks :)

My opinions
I suppose mods cause all this but in a different way. In every save, some kind of data of the plugins of your mods just stack over and over on your every save, then it exceeds the "healthy" limit, then that makes that save broken in time, than you cannot proceed anymore. That's why my save keeps getting broken after a while of playing. I guess we need to keep the number of the mods we have as minimum as possible or just to play the game vanilla. I guess this is what happens at the end when you use a buggy engine over and over again, with heavily modifying to♥♥♥♥♥♥ for 21 years.

This is it, I'm done.

then reinstall your mods , and that should be it

your save files are bloated if they pass 30mb, when they go past 40mb its really severe.
Simsettlements+addons add LOTS of save bloating and can cause save issues if your papyrus is bogged down.

what you can do is:
BACKUP YOUR SAVES BEFORE DOING THIS
Disable all mods and se if the problem persists
try and make a new character for testing if the save is corrupt.

It works when I create a new character, I'm sure on that. It happens after a while. For example, I got 54 hours of gameplay on my current save and it started to happen after that.

I just found out something:
My first save has 22.324 MB of size and it keeps increasing on every save. The last save before the broken one has 46 MB of size and it suddenly jumps to 77 MB on my lastest working save.

I guess the size of my saves keeps increasing on my every save and becomes broken down after a while. (when it exceeds the limit)

Do you think mods cause that? Is playing the game on vanilla the only way to play this game without issues?

Tyrant can you disable creation club items and still use the nexus manager ?

something in your save has broken and it is piling up in your save, someone with more a more favorable stance to the omnisiah might be able to rescue the save file.

I dont use any CC content as it is an uncontrolable element towards my modsetup.
but a quick google search indicates no, there is no way to disable CC content once you bought it.

What should I do about it? Most of my mods are the essential ones (for me) which I have been using since the first day (like see-through scopes or item sorting and things like that).

You are still able to disable installed Creation club content by manually editing Plugins.txt file in User/AppData/Local/Fallout4 and removing a Star symbol in front of the content you wish to just disable, but still keep it.

Or use LOOT to adjust it to your desire.

I have not tested if setting the file to read-only would create additional issues, nor can they be manipulated from ingame load order, as Kato Hostilus said.

It suggest using Save Editor to delete plugins from the save but the editor is deleted from Nexus and cannot edit any save anymore. It says "Range check error". On Youtube, someone said "editor no longer works unfortunetly, Fo4 devs must have changed something and now it cant read the saves". This makes sense because I downloaded a save for FROST, which is from 2016 and this save is the only one the editor can read.

They don't even let us fix their buggy product, I am at the point where I got nothing to say...

Do you think that CC contents cause this?
faustling Nov 29, 2019 @ 11:50pm
Did you ever figure this out? I started to have the same problem, shortly after installing CC. I've tried everything: turning off the virus checker, reinstalling the game, removing and reinstalling all my mods. Nothing works.
Kato Nov 30, 2019 @ 12:03am
I stopped using Creation Club entirely and deleted all of its assets from Data (not even logged in to CC) and purchased a new, better PC (old one was kinda potato and old). Now I have more than 125 hours on same walkthrough and never had a problem on saving. I used to think that when a save exceeds 75 MB on size, the engine cannot handle it but now my last hard save is 91.175 KBs and my latest quicksave is 125.664 KBs and I never had such a problem. You can try these.
faustling Nov 30, 2019 @ 1:12am
Thanks for the reply. How do I identify the CC assets in Data?
Kato Nov 30, 2019 @ 1:43am
.ba2 Files start with "cc" are CC files. But unfortunately the game may re-download these files if you directly delete them from the Data folder. If this occurs, you can find a way to delete CC files such as replacing CC files as 1kb empty file et cetera on the net.
faustling Nov 30, 2019 @ 10:20pm
There were some .esl files too. Also, a Fallout4.cc file in the main folder. I moved them all to a backup folder. I didn't know what you meant by "eplacing CC files as 1kb empty file et cetera on the net", so I made 0kb .txt files with the same names and then changed the file types, then write-protected them and used them as replacements. Having purged CC, I made a clean save (because quicksave was still working), cleaned it with the Fallrim Tools, and booted from that. No luck, it crashed when I tried to save. At this point, I am all out of ideas. The only clue I have is an initial error message on Vortex saying the plugins weren't sorted. I'm not sure what that means.

Someone else had a similar issue, it was because he had the game installed on one drive and save files on different drive. Sounds stupid, but he said it solved the issue.

Chasing that brahminshit CC file theory was a waste of time. Installing to a new PC solved the issue, the fact that CC stuff was not installed was pure coincidence.

I have not seen a single person post issues that the CC caused issues with saving.
