Survival mode. Never a bed when you need one!

but the problem is it does a bad job of telling you where the bed actually is..

As you continue playing, you'll start learning where convenient bed locations are. It's tough at first, and you also have to balance sleeping with keeping the adrenaline damage boost you get the longer you go without rest. If you stick with it, though, you'll get the hang of it pretty quickly! Survival is much more rewarding and really the only way I can play the game anymore

That's why you do a thorough playthrough before attempting survival

One way to play is to do day trips from a settlement. Always return at night. Set up a new settlement as needed. The empty one in downtown Boston makes a good main base for you.

Its not that difficult finding beds, they will be where they're expected to be. Even if its just a sleeping bag it still saves.

If you're in so much trouble that you keep replaying large sections, just get to the BoS or Institute, both provide quick travel means to a bed.

To be honest you need to play a sneak build and use scilenced weapons in survival. You don't have to deal with ultra slow healing if you never take damage.
