Bethesda.net has both forums for these questions, as well as mods for the actual consoles. You'd probably get the same, perhaps even better help there.
Although certain companions require a quest to reach the next affinity level. Nick, Danse, Cait, and McCready require a quest to max them out.

for preston, having him with you when you agree to help someone (doesn't matter if it's minute man related or not) is a great way to do it.. also modifying a weapon in front of him, BUT without mods you can only get credit for modding one weapon about once per day.
so if you don't want to get mods for affinity... mod a weapon in front of him (you can even just swap parts you already have) then go to somewhere that will get you asked to do something by an npc and say yes to do it.
They do not need to be your companion when you use a workbench and get an affinity reaction. They can be sitting idle in that settlement and receive it.
Strong is Special as he gains Affinity when you Kill Enemies. It is in his profile and it is in my opinion the only good way to max him. As he has serious problems with a lot of the stuff most players do, like entering Power Armor or Picking Locks.
If one manage to get Strong early he will likely max out pretty fast as there is enemies around every corner of the Commonwealth. But i think he is the only Companion that gains Affinity this way, by killing.
You left out he dislikes looting anything not in a corpse.
Personally I never attempted to get to max affinity with ol' Garvey though as I didn't fancy him following me around Sanctuary calling me "Babe". :P
Or option b keep spam failing mama Murphy’s speech check to make her quit chems.
(Doing this allowed me to bypass the need to take companions everywhere I got codsworth, Piper, Preston, Curie, and Danse in sanctuary spamming this choice and all their affinity’s were maxed before I knew it)
