Report a translation problem
There is a mod that lets companions use a variety of different weapons based on the situation. Forget what it's called. I don't use it. Your ammo mod might be the problem. Did you check the mod page for comments?
Also, companions (especially Cait) often picks up weapon at their own, eliminating the need of the weapon that you give to her. That is if the weapon is better than what she's wearing.
I am using AFT to get around that because it allows you to tweak the combat AI of a companion (use with care though). She's always using the hammer I gave her now, despite picking up some weapons.

Oddly enough, I've never noticed my companions pick up things. They always use the default weapons, never anything else
It may be worth noting I get this message during almost any mod install:

Despite this, the mods work, and until this I've seen no problems. Everything is configured properly according to the documentation and a video I found
They only do it during combat and it has to be an upgrade with ammo.
Makes sense, all the vanilla weapons have the "NPC uses ammo flag" removed with that mod. While mods adding guns would have that flag by default.
