Companions won't use my weapons
So, basically, I've tried giving Cait a gun (with a single bullet, infinite ammo for companions mod) and she didn't stay using it. I think she fired a few times, then went back to her shotgun.
Alright, fine, I'll give her a stronger melee weapon then. However, she didn't even use this, immediately resorting to her shotgun in battle.
Does anyone know why this is happening, and how I can fix it?

NPCs will always try to use the most damaging weapon if it has ammo.

Did you go into her inventory and have her equip it? Like you do for clothing. I give most companions a fully upgraded .38 pipe rifle. Has 19 damage. They always keep using it.
There is a mod that lets companions use a variety of different weapons based on the situation. Forget what it's called. I don't use it. Your ammo mod might be the problem. Did you check the mod page for comments?

It depends of the combat AI package Cait is running at that moment. She has one for melee and one for shotgun. Trade with her and remove all weapons except the melee one if you want to have her using the melee AI.

Also, companions (especially Cait) often picks up weapon at their own, eliminating the need of the weapon that you give to her. That is if the weapon is better than what she's wearing.

I am using AFT to get around that because it allows you to tweak the combat AI of a companion (use with care though). She's always using the hammer I gave her now, despite picking up some weapons.

1. Yeah, it was equipped, but it wasn't when I went back to check when she stopped using it
2. I checked the page, there's some similar issues, but none that apply to my situation

Oddly enough, I've never noticed my companions pick up things. They always use the default weapons, never anything else



It may be worth noting I get this message during almost any mod install:
"Your Fallout4Custom.ini is not configured correctly. Nexus Mod Manager was unable to make the necessary changes automatically. Please refer to the documentation located at (insert link to said documentation here.)
Despite this, the mods work, and until this I've seen no problems. Everything is configured properly according to the documentation and a video I found

They only do it during combat and it has to be an upgrade with ammo.

What gun was it? A vanilla one? Asking this because some modded weapons will consume NPC ammo even with the unlimited ammo mod, because they have a flag "NPC use ammo" checked in the CK. I noticed this with the Famas mod

Makes sense, all the vanilla weapons have the "NPC uses ammo flag" removed with that mod. While mods adding guns would have that flag by default.

With a few exceptions like missile and fatman launchers (fortunately)

The gun and ammo I'm pretty sure were vanilla, and I'm positive the melee weapon was

UPDATE: I checked around FO4Edit, and noticed that her weapon does a lot less damage than the ones I'm giving her, so no idea why she continues to refuse
