Second, Longfellow (and all Companions) will talk to you once you've done enough of the right things to trigger their Affinity quest dialog.
This is not Call of Doodie. It's an Action RPG, which means there's action, and role-playing/story-based elements. You have to do those story-based elements. Blasting through the dialog probably gave all the wrong answers, and he left. With your stuff. Which is now his stuff.
On the other hand, you may have done all the things he dislikes, and his dialog was to tell you that you're a doosh and he's leaving.
This is the problem with using followers as luggage - when you do something to drive them away, they take your stuff.
