Are silencers on sniper rifles useless?
I did not notice any effects of having a silencer on a sniper rifle so far. Whenever I sniper an enemy from a long distance with a silenced rifle and being in sneaking mode, his friends nearby still tend to quickly figure out where I am and come running to my direction. Or am I doing something wrong?

Suppressors are weird in this game.

They don't actually make you harder to detect, they actually increase accuracy or weapon sway or something, basically stuff OTHER than sound and detection.

So suppressors as they are designed in the real world don't exist, these are just gun upgrades.

They do increase the chance of a stealth hit. I forget what it is called. A stealth hit does more damage than a normal shot.

"So suppressors ... EDIT: Oops my bad.

Thats not good then, they should have no silencers at all then if they are just another muzzle modification. I assumed they would be like the silencers in New Vegas.

Its sneak attack hit and they always do double damage, and it can be done with any weapon without silencers.

BTW suppressors in the real world do not go Pfffffftttttt. They only turn a !!!!!BANG!!!!! into a Bang!. Easier on the shooters ears. That is it.

Note: I said suppressor, not silencer.

And yes, I know there is no such thing as a "silencer".

You know what I mean, this is not a gun experts forum.

There is a perk specifically for suppressed weapons. It makes your silenced weapons do additional sneak damage.

Yeah this is more or less the only real benefit to silencers.

Otherwise they are just a high tech weapon mod.

It sucks, I agree. But truth be told this games "sneaking" system seems pretty bare bone. I don't even think the sneak skill helps. Game is really geared towards killing stuff not sneaking by it.

I will check again when I play next time but I think it just increases any sneak attack with any weapon, no need for the weapon to be silenced.

I will try to some time go into sneak, wear shadowed armour at night and have a stealth boy on and see if shooting enemies from a distance with a silenced sniper rifle will still let them detect my location.
What everyone here is failing to note is that enemies will always run in the direction of incoming fire. The moment you land or miss your shot, try for one more if you're cheeky or know you can do it and then relocate. Failing to relocate when attempting to attack how you are will always result in them finding you.

The next best thing is to simply make sure your gun can do more damage than they can take and just waste 'em in one shot. Considerably easier if you can manage that. Taking stealth related perks also helps quite a bit too as they increase the sneak attack damage as well.

Nope. That's a different perk. There IS a perk that increases ALL sneak damage. AND there is a perk that increases silenced sneak damage. Trust me, I always play stealth.

They don't just run, they sometimes shoot in your direction. I shot some people from across the river recently, so no way for them to come close to me, yet they almost immediatelly started shooting towards me.

It seems annoying, but it's actually more realistic. We have no actual sniper rifles, you're not shooting from like a mile away, you're close enough that it's not that hard to figure out where the fire is coming from, and suppressors only make guns slightly less deafening, so they aren't going to change that. Disregarding realism, I dunno, I also feel annoyed when games either require, or are broken by, stealth (unless it's a dedicated stealth game like Thief, that's different).
