Using Commands with companions
Is there a way to trigger a particular command ?
I have a dickens of a time trying to get my companion to do what I want.
Sometimes I don't have to do anything and if I take off running she will be after me like a greyhound. But other times especially in a combat situation I will ask her to stay and that works ok. However if I click on my E key to command her to follow me, the only command that comes up is Go. I never know just what the commands will be, usually if I get closer to her I will get the one with the four options ( Talk, Dismiss, Thoughts and Relationship ).
I'd like to be able to use the Follow command more but it rarely shows itself, is there something I'm not doing right or is this just a glitch in the game.

The ability to control the companions in this game really really really really su@s. Really. It is not you. This is how it works. :steamsad:
If you use mods, I recommend one called Amazing Follower Tweaks. It lets you control them a lot better. It can also make the companion way too overpowered. It is easy to avoid that if you want to keep the game interesting. But you have to tweak the mods settings some.

I always wondered about this but never looked into it, but i'm 99% sure it's the distance. i always thought of it as shotgun range.

Using command will always allow you to use the 4 options, but if you're outside of 'shotgun range' you can only command them to Go/Stay. But while it's activated you can run up close to them and the Go/Stay will change to the 4 options. But if you're close to them when you hit Command you won't be able to use Go/Stay, you'll just get the 4 options.

So if you want them to unlock a door/safe/terminal you have to be outside of shotgun range when you command them.

I use UCF so I havent tried the follower tweaks mod but it might be worth looking into.

Thanks for the help, I think I can live with the Go and Stay commands but I sure wish I could get the Follow Me option come up more often. I prefer not to use mods just not that savvy about getting them. I swear some of the companions are a bigger pain in the neck than others. Right now I'm using Cait and she has a mind of her own it seems. You'll ask her to go somewhere and sometimes she hops to it but other times she takes her own sweet time doing it. I'm going to experiment with the distance theory, and see if I can get it to work better.

AFT is one of the simple mods. https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/26976/?tab=description

This is the contents of the 'zip' file:

📁 AmazingFollowerTweaks-26976-1-23-1546711775.7z
📄 readme_aft_1_23.txt (243 kb)
📄 unlockcurie.txt (0 kb)
📁 Data
📄 AmazingFollowerTweaks - Main.BA2 (4148 kb)
📄 AmazingFollowerTweaks.esp (2048 kb)
📄 unlockcurie.txt (0 kb)

You only need to add the .BA2 file and the .esp file into the data directory. Then you can activate it using the games built in mod manager. The MODS button the main menu. Then load order. You should move it down past all the official game files if it is not already done.

Thanks so much Bubblegum for all of the information, I'll check it out and see if it might be something I can handle but I'm just not that confident around PC's .

Follow me will only show up if they're not following you or they're in the Stay position. When you're close it'll show up in the 4 choices but if you're far it'll just be one option for Follow (it replaces Stay)

When you give them a command you have to take your crosshairs off them. If you tell a companion to do something they'll stop moving or move extremely slow if your crosshairs are on them but when you stop looking at them they'll speed up. (dont ask me why)

With Cait i'll tell her to unlock a safe then I'll look to the side because if I look at her or the safe she'll run up to it and stand there until I look away like she's trying to use the bathroom.

also..sometimes if there are obstacles in their path it takes them longer to move to their destination. There were times I literally had to stand back, hit command and then "Move here, move here, move here, open this" because they couldn't figure out how to get from point a to point b.

hope that helps...and mods are easy to use just follow the tutorials and read the description on the mod page...and backup your files just to be on the safe side.

Thanks for the suggestions, I did have some success with the FOLLOW command by using the distance method, but couldn't get it to work inside a building. It gets really frustrating if you are going up a series of stairs like on the outside of a building. The companion has difficulty following, I have to use GO command and lead him a few feet at a time to make it around each landing. I sometimes just give up and continue on and eventually he will show up next to me usually when I'm sneaking into a room and scares the hell out of me.
