If you've done up to the bit in Danse's personal quest then you must have done quite a lot of the BoS storyline already.
If you want to remain with BoS rather than the Institute, I'd suggest going back to Elder Maxson and initiate a dialogue - the option to inform him may crop up then (although I'm not sure).
Personally this is the point in the storyline that sort of frustrates me. So it's a good idea to do as many side quests with each faction as you can before deciding who to side with.
