[Fixed] Random crashes
I've played over 200 hours worth of modded Fallout 4 with hardly any problems. I decided to revisit the game and, after heavily modding it, noticed that it began to crash randomly. I uninstalled every mod but the game kept crashing outside of Vault 111. Since then, I have reinstalled Fallout 4 twice but the crashing still persists. In my most recent attempt, everything was going well until Codsworth tells you to come and look at the TV, at which point the game crashed. I tried again and this time made it all the way to the cryo chamber, at which point the game crashed again. I honestly have no idea what is going on and would really appreciate any help provided.

Edit: It seems that there is a problem with weapon debris and RTX graphics cards. After turning weapon debris off, Fallout 4 no longer crashes for me.

Did you uninstall every mod and then make a New Game?

Are you sure all traces of all mods are gone? Most people recommend an uninstall, deleting all FO4 folders to be sure, then reinstalling clean.

After uninstalling, I made sure that every folder was deleted. All traces should definitely be gone.

Hmm... do you have "weapon debris" turned on in the launcher config? It usually doesn't cause crashes that early, though.

Have you tried lowering other settings?

Have you tried verifying game files?

I've always had weapon debris on high but did hear that it can cause some problems. After turning it off, the game seemed fine but then ended up crashing anyway later on.

The settings have stayed the same throughout the entirety of me owning the game.

Verified the game files but nothing was missing.

I'm stumped.

I finally got around to running the update today, after getting the latest F4SE, and now my game won't even go the main menu, it CTD immediately after the loading screen :(

Depending how long ago was the last time you played, there may have been patches or changes to the engine since then that make your old settings not run as well. It doesn't need to stay that way, but lowering settings for a test could point you at a hardware problem or deficiency.

Graphics drivers also change over time and that could result in different performance. Tell your graphics control panel to reset FO4's settings to default for testing. Some driver versions will just not work right at all--you could try upgrading/downgrading.

That most likely means you didn't update F4SE correctly.

Ok so I messed around with the settings a bit but didn't notice any difference. I decided once again to turn weapon debris off like you suggested and all of a sudden the game seemed to be working fine. I completed the prologue twice and made it all the way to sanctuary without the game crashing once. i'm going to do some more testing before modding it again, but for the time being everything seems to be working fine. For now I'll conclude that weapon debris was the problem. Thanks so much for your help.

i just have one thing to say..... I don't have an option for "weapon debris" anywhere in any of the options on fallout 4. not the launcher nor in game. and i have an AMD graphics card not an RTX nor a Nvidia.

Are you using any kind of performance mods that may remove that feature?

Holy crap that saved me a lot of time. Just started a new playthrough but the game was randomly crashing. Thank you so much :VBOY: I did not know that this setting was conflicting with RTX GPUs?! :VGRUMPY:

I can confirm that this helped and fixed the issue. I played 200+ hours before and now it feels like a new game when its no longer crashing. Thanks OP :2017stickycrab:
